under consideration. Thanks for the great magazine.
But not all the news is discouraging. Dr. Tedros Adhanom —Jim Masters
Ghebreyesus, direct-general of the World Health Organization made
these points today:
“Of the four countries with the most cases, China is bringing its
epidemic under control and there is now a decline in new cases being
reported from the Republic of Korea… Both these countries demon-
strate that it’s never too late to turn back the tide on this virus.”
I certainly hope that we can gain a better understanding of this
disease and can return to a more normal status before more lives and
livelihoods are lost.
This is not to make light of a disease that has killed thousands
and will likely kill more, but panic doesn’t help. What we need now
is perspective, common sense, and a willingness to accept that the
future is unknowable.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Update…
Q
Hi Steve,
I’ll have to have a closer look. I can see the one on the nose
wheel; it’s the main gear where I can only remember seeing
one microswitch.
I wonder if I can ground test it by closing each one in turn?
My fear is that the hydraulic pump keeps running if it thinks the
gear is down. It is hard for me to figure out from the wiring diagram
just how the pumps, pressure regulator, and the switches determine
when to stop the pump.
—Paul
A
Hi Paul,
You’re right; the diagram can be confusing.
I’m going to describe the circuit that controls the motor:
1. The wire from “Landing Gear Control and Warning Circuit
Protector” 5-amp circuit breaker goes to the No. 12 terminal.
2. Power then goes from the No. 12 terminal to the squat
switch.
3. When the weight is off the left main landing gear, the squat
switch moves to fly position allowing power through the
switch to one side of the pressure switch.
a. If the pressure is between 1,500 and 1,800 psi, the switch is
open and no power flows.
b. If the pressure is lower than 1,500 psi, the pressure switch
closes, and power flows through it to the “slow” air pressure
switch.
4. If the airspeed is high enough, the “slow” switch toggles a
switch allowing current to flow to the gear-up solenoid that,
when closed, supplies power to the gear-up winding in the
bi-directional landing gear pump electric motor.
5. Power then flows through the solenoid to the gear motor,
causing the pump to turn, which increases the system hy-
