Quiz No. 3 –Problem Solving

SHOW A DETAILED SOLUTION OF EACH PROBLEM
DEADLINE OF SUBMISSION IS @ 3:00PM
Any two or more students proven to have the same structure of a solution of any problem will NOT EARN
any credit on that problem, regardless of who the sourceis.
Note: When frictional losses are accounted in the analysis, termed here as headloss, it must be placed in
the left side of the Bernoulli Equation, alongside with the summation of energies at the initial state.

1. A pipe tapers from 1 m diameter at the high end to 0.5 m at the low end. Quantity of water flowing is
5400 L/min. If the pressure at the high end is 70 kPa, find the pressure at the low end. The high and low
ends of the pipe has a height of 3m. 99.33 kpa
2. The diameter of a pipe carrying water changes gradually from 150 mm at A to 450 mm at B. If A is 5 m
lower than B, what will be the difference in pressure, in kPa, between A and B? Water is flowing at 180
L/s. Assume that frictional losses are negligible. 2.187 kpa
3. Water is flowing at 15 L/s from points 1 to 2. The pressure at 1 is 100 kPa and at 2 is 70 kPa. Compute
the loss of head between 1 and 2. 3.058 m
4. If the velocity of flow in a 75mm diameter fire hose is 0.5m/s, what is the velocity in a 25mm diameter jet
issuing from a nozzle attached at the end of the pipe? 4.5 m/s
5. A pipe carrying oil of SG=0.877 changes in size from 150mm at section A to 450mm at section B.
Section A is 3.6m below B and the pressures are 90kPa and 60kPa, respectively. If the discharge is
150L/s, find the headloss at that two sections, and the direction of flow (A to B? or B to A?) 3.514 m
6. Water enters a turbine through a 600mm diameter pipe under a pressure of 14kPa. It leaves through a
900mm diameter exhaust pipe with a pressure of 4kPa. A vertical distance of 2.5 m (the exhaust pipe is
lower than the suction pipe) separates the centers of the two pipes at the sections where the pressures
are measured. If 500L of water passes the turbine each second, compute the power supplied to the
turbine by the water? 13.271 Kj/kg ; 6635.5 kw
7. A 70 mm fire hose discharges a 25 mm jet. If the headloss in the nozzle is 2.5 m, what gage pressure
must be maintained at the base of a nozzle to throw a stream to a vertical height of 30 m, neglecting air
resistance? 318.825 kpa
8. Water flows through a pipeline whose diameter contracts from 45cm at A to 30cm at B after which it
forks into two branches. The first branch is 15cm in diameter discharging at C, and the second branch is
22.5cm in diameter discharging at D. The velocities at A and D are 1.8m/s and 3.6m/s, respectively.
What would be the velocities, m/s, and volume flow rates, m3/s, at sections B and C? 4.05 m/s
9. A pipe 12.5 cm in diameter is used to transport oil of SG=0.75 under a pressure of 1 bar. If the total
energy relative to a datum plane 2.5 m below the center of the pipe is 20 m, determine the flow rate of
oil in m3/s. 0.97 m/s
10. Water enters a pump through a 25cm diameter pipe at 35kPa. It leaves the pump at 140kPa through a
15cm diameter pipe. If the flow rate is 150L/s, find the horsepower delivered to the water by the pump.
Assume suction and discharge sides of pump are at the same elevation. 27.417 hp
