CE-32 Factsheet #3:

1. There is a leak in a horizontal 300mmØ pipeline. Upstream from the leak two gages 600m apart
showed a difference of 140 kPa. Downstream from the leak two gages 600m apart showed a
difference of 126 kPa. Assuming f = 0.025, how much water is being lost from the pipe.
2. Water flows from a tank through 160 ft of 4 inches diameter pipe and then discharges into air as
shown in the figure. The flow of water in the pipe is 12 cfs. Assume n = 0.013 and neglect minor
losses. Determine the following:
a. The velocity of flow in the pipe in fps
b. The total head lost in the pipe in feet
c. The pressure at the top of the tank in psi
3. A pump draws 20 lit/sec of water from reservoir A to reservoir B as shown. Assuming f = 0.02 for
all pipes, compute the horsepower delivered by the pump and the pressures at points 1 and 2.
4. Two pipes, each 300m long, are connected in series. The flow of water through the pipes is 150
lit/sec with a total frictional loss of 15m. If one pipe has a diameter of 300mm, what is the
diameter of the other pipe? Neglect minor losses and assume f = 0.02 for both pipes.
5. A pipe system, connecting two reservoirs whose difference in water surface elevation is 13m,
consists of 320m of 600mmØ pipe (pipe-1), branching into 640m of 300mmØ pipe (pipe-2) and
640m of 450mmØ pipe (pipe-3) on parallel, which join again to a single 600mmØ line 1300m
long (pipe-3). Assuming f = 0.032 for all pipes, determine the flow rate in each pipe.
6. Water is flowing at the rate of 300 lit/sec from A to E as shown in the figure. Compute the flow
in each pipe in lit/sec and the total head loss. Assume f = 0.025 for all pipes.
7. How many liters per second of water must the pump shown supply when the flow needed in the
915mmØ pipe is 1.314 m³/s? Assume f = 0.017 for all pipes.
8. The turbine shown is located in the 350mmØ line. If the turbine efficiency is 90%, determine its
output power in kilowatts
9. Determine the flow in each of the pipes shown in the figure. Assume f = 0.02 for all pipes
10. The pipe network shown in the figure represents a spray rinse system. Find the flow in each
pipe. Assume C1 = 120 for all pipes.
