Chapter 6: Steps to draw a Bode diagram (frequency response) of a system based on the open
loop transfer function

1. Rewrite the transfer function so that the lowest order term in the numerator & denominator are unity

e.g. 1: if the denominator is in polynomial form:

e.g. 2: if the denominator is in factorized form:

2. Separate the transfer function into its constituent parts:

a. Gain constant, K

1
b. Poles at the origin,
𝑠

c. Zeros at the origin, s

1
d. Real Poles, 𝑠
+1
𝜔0

𝑠
e. Real Zeros, +1
𝜔0

1
f. Complex conjugate poles, 𝑠 2 2𝜁𝑠
( ) + +1
𝜔0 𝜔0

𝑠 2 2𝜁𝑠
g. Complex conjugate zeros, ( ) + +1
𝜔0 𝜔0

e.g. 1: This function has:

- a constant gain, K= 6,
- a zero at s = -10,
- complex conjugate poles at the roots of s2+3s+50.

3. Draw the Bode diagram for each part according to the drawing rules (refer to the Bode’s table)

4. Draw the overall Bode diagram by adding up the results from step 3.
