This document provides instructions for three open-ended lab experiments in heat and mass transfer to be conducted using Energy 2D simulation software. The experiments examine the effects of thermal conductivity of fins, natural convection between plates of different temperatures, and reflectivity of reflectors on heat transfer. Guidelines are given for writing the lab report, including sections for the title, problem statement, apparatus, introduction, objective, literature review, hypothesis, methodology, results and discussion, conclusion, and references. Students are asked to submit the lab reports by a date to be determined.

Experiment 1: Effect of thermal conductivity of fins on heat dissipation
Hypothesis: Fins made from higher thermal conductivity materials increase the rate of heat dissipation Access the example at: Example → Industrial applications → Heat fins NMB31203 Heat and Mass Transfer January 2020
Experiment 2: Natural convection between two horizontal plates with different
temperature Hypothesis: The positions of hot and cold plates and magnitude of temperature difference affect heat transfer between these plates. Access the example at: Example → Convection → Natural convection with different temperatures NMB31203 Heat and Mass Transfer January 2020
Experiment 3: Effect of reflectivity of reflector on heat transfer between source and
receptor Hypothesis: A higher reflectivity lead to a better heat transfer between source and receptor. Access the example at: Example → Radiation → Reflective radiation heat transfer NMB31203 Heat and Mass Transfer January 2020
