SEMESTER : JULY 2020

ASSIGNMENT NO : 1 [Analytical calculation & Hypermesh Simulation]

PREPARED FOR : DR. RESHID MESERET NASIR

Question 1
a) Using two beam elements determine the global stiffness matrix, the
deflection, slope at the free end and reaction force at B in the beam
shown in Figure 1. Assume that EI is constant for the beam. Use P,E, I
and L to determine the answer.

Figure 1: Geometry of the beam

b) The axial rod show in Figure 2 has an axial rigidity EA=15x10 6lb. The rod
is to be modeled by using element for AB and a linear element for BC.
Determine the stiffness matrix, the displacement at point B, stress
distribution and the reaction force at A. Use also Hypermesh software to
simulate stress and displacement and compare with the analytical
solution.

Figure 2: Geometry of the rod

Question 2
Develop the global stiffness matrix and element forces for the beam shown in
Figure 2. Determine the nodal displacements and rotations at L/4, 3L/4. Divided
the beam into 2 elements. A downward vertical force of P = 60 kN is applied at
middle. Let E = 200 GPa, q=2KN/m and I = 3×10-4 m4 throughout the beam and L =
4 m. The beam has a square cross section. Use also Hypermesh to evaluate the
stress distribution and the displacement profile and compare with analytical
solution.

This view is highly useful when working solely with components as none of the other
collectors are shown in the view. This view contains all of the visibility control and right
click functions of the Model View. Additionally it adds fields that show the
mesh and geometry shading as well as the property and material applied to each
component.
1. Click Component or icon

2. Write down the details as below:

3. Click create.
4. Using the Geometry or icon > nodes.

i. X > 0.000 > Create > Press F on the keyboard to “fit” the model to the screen.

ii. X > 508 > Create > Press F on the keyboard to “fit” the model to the screen.
