Illiterate or ignorant response

The prophet was illiterate and the hadith which say he wanted to write or wrote will not be him writing
by hand rather it is from him i.e. he dictated what to say in these letters and his companions the ones
who could write and they wrote it but the letter was from the Prophet. Think of a king when he
“wrote” letters to other monarchs. He had a scribe who would write down what he said but the letter
would be from the king despite the fact the scribe wrote it.
