2020 SUMMER INSET

Digital Learning Modality

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a highly essential approach to assisting people who
are stressed, shocked, troubled, and enervated by dramatic events such as adversities,
catastrophes, public health emergency, pandemic, etc.
Dr. Liza Firestone in her article titled The Importance of Psychological First Aid in
Japan highlighted that PFA “does not require a professional to carry out the steps of care.
The process can be learned and employed by anyone who can make direct contact with
individuals affected by crisis.” ( https://www.psychalive.org/the-importance-of-psychological-first-aid-
in-japan/)

Reflecting on the videos,

1. Write a short essay on the insights that you have gained regarding PFA. Why must
teachers know how to conduct PFA? Why must PFA be conducted prior to the start
of classes?
2. Please answer directly below. Please observe the same alignment, spacing, font
style, and font size. You may (or may not put a title for your essay). There are no
limits as to the number of words, paragraphs, or pages. Thank you for sharing your
thoughts with us.

There are many insights that I have learned from Mr. Ian Arnaez which I would like
to share regarding Psychological First Aid. Yes, we are not psychologists or psychiatrists.
This is one of the many reasons why we, teachers, need to know and study PFA so that
we will be able to conduct and facilitate it properly to the learners who are voluntarily or
willing to undergo this training since it follow specific steps.
Psychological First Aid uses the Support, Enabling, and Empowering Students
Manual or the SEES developed by the Department of Education and UNESCO. Originally,
this manual was intended for 12-17 years old children. However, the whole process of this
manual is fit for all ages. Teachers must know how to conduct PFA in order to identify and
address the intermediate needs of the students prior to the emergence of Covid-19
pandemic. These needs will be used as bases for the interventions that could help address
these particular needs of the pupils. One of the benefits of conducting PFA is that it aids
the recipients to develop adaptive ways to cope with a stressful environment. PFA must be
conducted to the learners prior to the start of the classes so that they will be able cope up
or adapt to the current situation. PFA will help teachers understand learners on the surface
level.
