2020 SUMMER INSET

Digital Learning Modality

After the session on Financial Literacy,

1. Reflect on how this will affect you as a person and as a teacher in terms of your
financial status.
2. State your commitment on what you will do to sustain or improve your financial
literacy.
3. Please answer directly below. Please observe the same alignment, spacing, font
style, and font size. There are no limits as to the number of words, paragraphs, or
pages.

“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you are interested in
doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to
something, you accept no excuses; only results.” Kenneth Balanchard

In educational context, teacher does his/her job because he/she has the
responsibility of nurturing the character, the mind and even the spirit of a child. And the
teacher wants nothing but RESULTS or OUTPUTS. The teacher builds the future
leaders of the nation and therefore there is no way that teachers could say NO to these
tasks either. Commitment is a word most revered by teachers because he/she believes
that in his/her hands lie the most sensitive task…sculpture the cognitive, social,
psychological, emotional being of the child. Teachers are committed to assume the role
of second parents and trying to mold a child who is equipped with knowledge, skills and
behaviour to face greater risks of this world. Teachers BUILD, ENHANCE, CREATE,
PRODUCE individuals who stands uprightly spirited, valued and with high cognition for
the future of his nation. And teachers do these in silence because it needs no further
acknowledgement. This I believed is COMMITMENT.
On the other hand, we cannot deny the fact that we need financial resources to
support our passion, fuel our commitment and sustain our dedication. I have not always
seen money on top of my priorities. I just enjoyed my profession. Not until my eyes
were opened to the reality of providing the needs of our family. We wait long enough
for the monthly salary to be spent for a short period of time. No one should be blamed.
Instead, it is now time to assess ourselves; to really know what truly makes us happy
and how we can be financially literate. Watching the video prepared by the discussant,
Ma’am Ma. Tressa G. Elbanbuena and knowing more about financial literacy greatly
affected me as a person and as a teacher as well. First, this led me to the discovery of

my current financial status. During the pre-assessment, I only scored 5, which indicates
that there is a need for me to take control of my finances. Second, after knowing my
current financial status, I have realized that there is truly a great need for everyone, not
just teachers, to be financially aware and literate since we are working hard to earn
money to support our day to day living. There are even laws mentioned by DepEd Sec.
Briones which mandate the teaching of financial literacy to students. These are RA
10697 and RA 10922. She added that “if you want to teach financial literacy to
students, you have to start with the teachers.” Third, this session made me realize the
importance of having a budget or spending plan. We should know and plan where our
money will be spent and the reason for the expenditure. There should be allotted
money for insurance, savings, investments and most importantly, expenses.
As a teacher and a responsible citizen, I do not doubt my commitment to render my
services in the field of teaching and I know I will not ever doubt to commit myself to a
sustainable financial literacy. Amidst the pandemic, I have gained depth understanding
about simple life. Staying at home for several weeks brought me to a moment of
reflection. I can still live even without having an eat-out set up. I can still live with some
pennies in my pocket. I can still live with eating my dinner at 6 pm and sleep at exactly
8 o’clock. These situations awakened my awareness that life is still the same
regardless of how much do you have in life. Debt comes in continuously when wants
overwhelm your needs. Thus, from these experiences, I have known myself better than
before when it comes to financial handling.
