At the end of the topic, the students/trainees must be able to:
• Understand the importance of animal husbandry.
• Determine different livestock species.
• Determine different poultry species.
• Internalize scientific names of different livestock and poultry species.
• Identify eggs of different poultry species
Introduction
• Ancient time –animals provide food, fiber, leather and draft power that
greatly contribute in the growth and survival of humanity
• Modern days –agribusiness enterprise
• Animal agriculture –business of producing, processing and marketing high
quality protein, fiber and other animal products for human consumption
• To fully achieve its gains –system and management decisions applied must be
based on scientific and economic principles
Introduction
• Animal science –study of the biology and management of higher animals.
• Animal husbandry –breeding, feeding, care, and management of animals for
the purpose of making profit
• Animal husbandry –animal science and economic principles must be
considered and should be incorporated in the techniques and management
practices in animal production
LIVESTOCK
The carabao is a swamp type

CARABAO
domestic Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)
found in the Philippines and Guam. The
word "carabao" is borrowed from
Spanish carabao which is from Waray-
Waray karabaw. Water buffaloes were
most likely introduced to the Philippines
by Malay immigrants in the period 300 to
200 BC. The word carabao and kalabaw in
Filipino was derived from the Malay word
kerbau.

Domesticated goats (Capra
GOAT hircus) are descended from
the pasang (Capra aegagrus),
which is probably native to Asia,
the earliest records being Persian.
In China, Great Britain, Europe,
and North America, the domestic
goat is primarily a milk producer,
with a large portion of the milk
being used to make cheese.

Cattle, domesticated bovine farm animals

CATTLE that are raised for their meat, milk, or hides


or for draft purposes.
All modern domestic cattle are believed to
belong to the species Bos taurus (European
breeds such as Shorthorn and Jersey) or
Bos indicus (Zebu breeds such as
Brahman) or to be crosses of these two
(such as Santa Gertrudis).

Sheep, (Ovis aries), species of
SHEEP domesticated ruminant (cud-
chewing) mammal, raised for its
meat, milk, and wool. The sheep is
usually stockier than its relative the
goat (genus Capra); its horns, when
present, are more divergent; it has
scent glands in its face and hind feet;
and the males lack the beards of
goats. Sheep usually have short tails.

It is believed that the majority of the
SWINE breeds we now know are descended
from the Eurasian Wild Boar (Sus
scrofa). Archaeological evidence
from the Middle East indicates
domestication of the pig occurs as
early as 9,000 years ago, with some
evidence for domestication even
earlier in China.

POULTRY
Chicken, (Gallus gallus), any of
CHICKEN more than 60 breeds of medium-
sized poultry that are primarily
descended from the wild red jungle
fowl (Gallus gallus, family
Phasianidae, order Galliformes) of
India. The chicken is perhaps the
most widely domesticated fowl,
raised worldwide for its meat and
eggs.

Duck, any of various species of relatively
MALLARD DUCK small, short-necked, large-billed waterfowl.

The wild mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is


believed to be the ancestor of all domestic
ducks, and it has undergone numerous
crossbreedings and mutations since it was
first domesticated in China between 2,000
and 3,000 years ago.

MUSCOVY DUCK The Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata) is a large
duck native to Mexico, Central, and South
America. Small wild and feral breeding
populations have established themselves in the
United States, particularly in the lower Rio
Grande Valley of Texas, as well as in many other
parts of North America, including southern
Canada. Feral Muscovy Ducks are found in New
Zealand and have also been reported in parts of
Europe.

PEKIN DUCK
Pekin duck is an old dual
purpose duck breed. It was originated in
China and is now one of the most popular
commercial duck breeds. It was bred from
the mallard in China. Pekin duck is also
known by some other names, such as the
American Pekin duck or Long Island
duck.

QUAIL

The common quail (Coturnix


coturnix), or European quail, is a
small ground-nesting game bird in
the pheasant family Phasianidae. It is
mainly migratory, breeding in the
western Palearctic and wintering in
Africa and southern India.

TURKEY
Turkey, either of two species of
birds classified as members of either
the family Phasianidae or
Meleagrididae (order Galliformes).
The best known is the common
turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), a
native game bird of North America
that has been widely domesticated
for the table.

GOOSE Goose (Anser domesticus), any of various
large heavy-bodied waterfowl
intermediate in size and build between
large ducks and swans, especially those of
the genera Anser (so-called gray geese)
and Branta (so-called black geese) in the
bird family Anatidae. Domestication of
geese began in several locations during the
Neolithic Period (some 11,000 years to
4,000 years ago), spreading to Egypt about
3,000 years ago.

OSTRICH Ostrich, (Struthio camelus), large
flightless bird found only in open
country in Africa. The largest living
bird, an adult male may be 2.75 metres
(about 9 feet) tall—almost half of its
height is neck—and weigh more than
150 kg (330 pounds); the female is
somewhat smaller. The ostrich’s egg,
averaging about 150 mm (6 inches) in
length by 125 mm (5 inches) in diameter
and about 1.35 kg (3 pounds), is also the
world’s largest.

PIGEON Pigeon (Columba Livia),
any of several hundred
species of birds constituting
the family Columbidae (order
Columbiformes). Smaller
forms are usually called
doves, larger forms pigeons.
An exception is the white
domestic pigeon, the symbol
known as the “dove of
peace.”

Peafowl, any of three
species of resplendent birds
of the pheasant family,
Phasianidae (order
Galliformes). The two most-
PEAFOWL recognizable species of
peafowl are the blue, or
Indian, peacock (Pavo

Emu, (Dromaius
EMU novaehollandiae), flightless
bird of Australia that is the
second largest living bird: the
emu is more than 1.5 metres (5
feet) tall and may weigh more
than 45 kg (100 pounds). The
emu is the sole living member
of the family Dromaiidae (or
Dromiceiidae) of the order
Casuariiformes, which also
includes the cassowaries.

GUINEA FOWL
Guinea fowl, any of a family, Numididae (order
Galliformes), of African birds that are alternatively placed
by some authorities in the pheasant family, Phasianidae. The
family consists of 7–10 species, one of which, Numida
meleagris, is widely domesticated for its flesh and as a
“watchdog” on farms (it gabbles loudly at the least alarm).

PHEASANT The common pheasant
(Phasianus colchicus)
has 20–30 races ranging
across Asia. Birds
naturalized elsewhere are
mixtures of races, with
the gray-rumped ringneck
(or Chinese) strain usually
dominating.
