It was the first day of classes. The grade two children were happy. They
were telling stories about themselves.
“I’m eight years old. My father is a teacher,” Edna said.
“I live in Tondo. I’m eight years old,” Lucita said.
“my mother is a vendor. Y father is a fisherman. I’m nine years old,”
Rolando said.
Dario was alone in his room. He was drawing his pet dog. His dog was quiet
while he was drawing it.
Dario colored the picture brown and white. He wrote a story under it. It is
like this:
This is my pet. It is Spotty. It is my playmate. I love Spotty.
One Saturday morning Josie went to the market with her mother. She
saw many kinds of fish, vegetables and fruits.
Mother bought tomatoes, mangoes, pechay and eggplant.
“Will you not buy meat and fish, mother?” Josie asked.
“No, Josie, meat and fish are dear. I’ll buy mongo and eggs instead,”
Mother said.
It is Sunday. There are many people at the Rizal park. The flowers are in
bloom. The fish in the ponds are of many colors.
“Let’s sit here,” Mother said. ‘Let’s watch the beautiful fountains.”
“I don’t want to sit, Mother. I want to play on the green grass,” Bing said.
“Let’s play with my ball,” Ernesto said.
Clang! Clang! It was the bell for recess. The children lined up. Some went
went out to play. Others went to the toilet. There were those who went to the
school canteen to buy something to eat.
“I’ll buy a banana,” Elsa said.
“I’ll buy a chocolate candy,” Nora said.
Anita looked at her money and said, I’ll buy a sandwich.
Nardo and his father were on a bus going to Baguio. It was a very
cold day so they had their sweaters on.
“Those mountains are very high. They are green and beautiful,” Nardo
said.
“Look down,” said Father. “What do you see?”
“I can see the river. Its water is clear and white. How nice! ” Nardo said.
Edna and Edgar were playing together one morning. May I try bicycle? Edna
asked. It’s blue and new. I like it. Father gave me this bicycle only yesterday. It
was my birthday gift from him, Edgar said. Edgar helped Edna get on the
bicycle. Edna rode around the house. How happy she was!
Lucita saw a beggar. She was a thin and old. Lucita wanted to help but
she had only 1 peso. It was just enough for jeep fare in going home. I’ll just
walk home. This 1 peso will help the beggar. Lucita said to herself. Then she
placed the coin into the beggar’s hand. Lucita was very happy as she walked
home. Can you tell why?
