CILO1: Demonstrate management and leadership skills to provide safe and quality care;
Martha is appointed as the new Patient Care Manager of Saint John Paul II Medical Center, a
private tertiary hospital. She had her orientation to the policies, procedures, guidelines and
rules of the hospital and the department. She was informed by the Chief Nursing Officer that as
a manager, she has the legitimate right to give command to her staff. Moreover, as a manager,
she can give sanctions for non-compliance to the policies, standards, protocols, and rules of the
organization.
Martha’s first day in office was uneventful. The staffs recognize her legitimate right to give
command as their manager. She scheduled a meeting to discuss her platform of leadership and
governance of the department and to level off expectations from the nursing personnel in the
unit. She emphasizes her vision to transform the department to one that provides safe and
quality care in a total healing environment. The staffs admire her ability to change their
perceptions, attitudes and behaviour to do what she deems vital to the attainment of their
goals and objectives.
