CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

1. TYPE 1

S + WILL/CAN/MAY + V-1 IF S + V-1 (s/es)

Example:
=John will travel around the world if he has a lot money
=She may come if her mother allows her.
=Doni and Dani will not attend the meeting if the committee doesn’t invite them.

Fungsi: Menyatakan suatu harapan yang mungkin atau tidak mungkin terjadi jika syaratnya
Terpenuhi

2. TYPE 2

S + WOULD/COULD/MIGHT + V-1 IF S + V-2

Example:
= John would travel around the world if he had a lot of money.
The fact: John doesn’t have a lot of money, so he can not travel around the world.
= She might come if her mother allowed her.
The fact: She will not come because her mother doesn’t allow her.
=If Anita were here, everything would be okay.(Inversi: Were Anita here, everything
would be okay.
The fact: Anita isn’t here, so everything isn’t okay.

Fungsi: Menyatakan suatu harapan yg bertentangan dgn kenyataan pada saat ini. Harapan
itu tidak bisa diwujudkan karena syaratnya tidak terpenuhi.

3. TYPE 3

S +WOULD/COULD/MIGHT + HAVE + V-III IF S + HAD + V-III

Example:
= John would have travelled around the world if he had had a lot of money.
The fact: John didn’t travel around the world because he didn’t have a lot of
money
= She might have come if her mother had allowed her.
The fact: She didn’t come because her mother didn’t allow her.
=If he hadn’t been sick, he could have attended class.
The fact: He was sick, so he couldn’t attend class.

Catatan:Untuk 2 kalimat ini bisa dibuat inversi:

=Had John had a lot of money, he would have travelled around the world.
=Had her mother allowed her, she might have come.
 =Had he not been sick, he could have attended class.

mengungkapkan sebuah penyesalan di masa lampau.
