Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy also known as talk therapy is defined as a way to treat people with scientific
methods for not only mental diseases like bipolar disorder but also psychological issues e.g stress
that may have any reason which results in maladjustment. It began when talk therapy was
introduced in psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud and later the work on psychotherapy came into
view. It involves the discussion between an individual, couple or group and mental health
specialist. Psychotherapy tends to work on a deep emotional level and find out the reason behind
the symptoms a client is experiencing. Client’s ability to deal with situations and feelings are
improved either from the past or in future. There are many approaches in psychotherapy and
each requires different time and method. Therapists work techniques that build confidence so
client shares all emotions and situations they would not share in other settings. Normally
psychotherapy sessions are arranged once a week of 30 to 50 minutes. First few sessions contain
assessment and knowing the client while building the trust. Structured plan of sessions are
followed by mutual decision of client and therapist to tackle the present issue according to its
requirements such as short time period for daily issues as it require less treatment to recover from
them and long term sessions for severe disorders. Psychotherapy affects differently on each
individual and their therapist. The goal of psychotherapy is to heal the patient psychologically
and about 75% of people show they are positively affected by it. Some approaches of
psychotherapy are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), aversion therapy, interpersonal and group
therapy.
