have over verb: to invite to your house for a visit
I’m having some friends over tonight for dinner.
hold verb: to host; to arrange
held / held We’re holding a party at our house on Wednesday.
invite verb: to ask someone to come to a party or an event
I invited my brother to come to my house for dinner.
miss verb: to feel bad because someone is not around
My wife is visiting her father for a week. I miss her.
slice verb: to cut into pieces with a knife
John sliced the cake and gave me a piece.
will verb: future helping verb
I will do my homework tonight.
would verb: used to express about a past repeated action
When I was young, I would walk to school every day.
would verb: used to answer a polite request with would
Would you like some tea? Yes, I would.
help yourself verb: to take some food without being served
Nobody was at the table so John helped himself to some food.
afraid adjective: frightened because you think that you may get hurt or that
something bad may happen
The man had a gun. I was afraid he might shoot me.
afterwards adverb: at a later time
We ate dinner in the dining room and afterwards we watched TV.
anywhere pronoun: an unknown place or location; in/at any location
I can’t find my wallet anywhere.
as conjunction: when; as something is happening
As I answered the phone, he knocked on the door.
before adverb: at an earlier time
I know Ali. I met him before, when I was in Riyadh.
fresh adjective: not old; just picked or made
The milk was fresh. I just bought it at the store.
inside adverb: within a building or place
John is not in the yard. He went inside to get warm.
nowhere pronoun: not any place
There’s nowhere as good as home.
outside adverb: not in a building
John’s not in the house. He went outside to exercise.
somewhere pronoun: in/at some place
John isn’t working today. He went somewhere with his wife.
stale adjective: not fresh
This bread is stale. It’s two weeks old.
anniversary noun: the date when something happened
I got married on Jan. 1st. Every year my wedding
anniversary will be on January 1st.
barbecue noun: a party where food is cooked outside
There’s a barbecue at John’s house tonight.
beer noun: a drink with alcohol
He drank a beer and ate a hot dog.
catsup noun: same as ketchup (see below)
celebration noun: a party
There was a celebration for the graduates at the Officer’s Club.
ceremony noun: an official ritual to celebrate or remember something
My wedding ceremony was very beautiful.
cheese noun: a solid food made from milk, that is usually white or yellow
I like cheese on my hamburger.
chocolate noun: a flavor used to make candy, cakes, desserts, etc.
I had chocolate cake for dessert.
club noun: a group or organization of people who share an interest
I joined a stamp collecting club last week.
company noun: guests or visitors
I have company at the house. My parents are visiting.
drink noun: something to drink
John wants a drink. Bring him a Pepsi.
guest noun: someone who is invited or comes to your house
My friend from Jeddah is coming to visit me. He will be
my guest for one week.
invitation noun: a request to attend a party or event
I received an invitation to the Colonel’s party today.
ketchup noun: a cold red sauce made from tomatoes that you put on food
I bought a bottle of ketchup at the commissary today.
luncheon noun: a party at lunchtime for a group of people
The officers had a luncheon after the meeting.
mayonnaise noun: a white sauce that you put on meat sandwiches
I want a beef sandwich with salt and mayonnaise.
mustard noun: a yellow sauce that you put on hot dogs or hamburgers
I want a hot dog with mustard on it.
pickles noun: cucumbers that have been preserved in vinegar or salt water
At McDonald’s, they put pickles on your hamburger.
potato salad noun: a salad made from potatoes
I ate chicken and potato salad last night.
rain check noun: a promise to do something at a later time
I cancelled my appointment with the Lt. and I gave him
a rain check for tomorrow.
reception noun: a party for a visitor or an important person
After the meeting, there was a reception for the general.
roll noun: a type of bread
He put butter on his roll before he ate it.
sauce noun: a liquid used on food to make it taste better
I put tomato sauce on my spaghetti.
steak noun: a piece of meat, usually beef
I ate a steak for dinner last night.
strawberry noun: a fruit
I ate some strawberries and ice cream for dessert.
wedding noun: a ceremony to get married
Sue and I are married. Our wedding was in June.
wine noun: an alcoholic drink made from grapes
He likes to drink red wine from the Bordeaux, France region with dinner.
