NEW MILLENIUM

- Exemplified by the garish application of pastel colors and the mixing and matching of ornament
styles
- Skyscrapers adopted the tripartite division of columnar architecture (tower – on – the- -
podium) : the podium , the shaft and the crown.
- TRIPARTITE - a method of visually organizing the facade of the building by dividing it up into
three sections, similar to as found on a Classical column (base, shaft, capital)
- Rise of master planned micro-cities like Bay City, Eastwood City, Fort Bonifacio Global City and
Rockwell Center, retail environments SM Mall of Asia, Gateway Mall, Trinoma, and Greenbelt
Mall; and gated communities of suburban pretensions.

- Inspirations were drawn from aircraft technology, robotics and cyberspace as demonstrated by
the One San Miguel Building, the PBCom Tower, and the GT International Tower.
- Reflective blue or aquamarine curtain walls, aluminum cladding, metallic sun visors, and metal
mullions are mainstays of millennium skyscrapers.
- Presence of architecture of deconstruction, which is characterized physically by controlled
fragmentation, non-linear design processes, stimulating unpredictability, asymmetric
geometries and orchestrated chaos like the works of Alexius Medalla, Eduardo Calma and Joey
Yupangco.
ALEXUS MEDALLA

Architecture in Cebu City - Alexius B. Medalla, Janet Go Medalla, and Ryan Denver C. Rasines.

- famous work of arkinamix - The Tinderbox, a café-restaurant famous for its humidor and deli,
has undergone an unprecedented facelift without closing its doors. The original store opened 30
years ago, one of the first in Cebu to offer wine, cheese and cigars. It operated from an old
house with timber framing and a six-meter frontage to the road. Arkinamix’s initial design
challenge was how to maximize the frontage to give Tinderbox a more expressive look and
design identity. The store was last renovated by Ed Calma before the turn of the millennium.
Medalla describes Calma’s work as “a modernist box with Neutra-ish vertical strip window
renditions.” The design was born out of the original house structure, and wasn’t built to last
because of the materials used then.
