What is the significance of attachment?

Attachment is a psychological state where one individual is secure and emotionally stable

when close to the person they bond with. Attachment plays a critical role in shaping

relationships. Adults and children manifest attachment in different ways. Attachment is crucial

for children to be secure in their exploration, learning, motivation, and wellbeing (Shahar-

Maharik & Oppenheim, 2018). It makes adults feel safer, temperament, adapted, and resilient

(Simpson & Rholes, 2017).

When a child is born, they need to form a bond with their parent. Usually, the mother

comforts the crying newborn by holding it close and talking to it. Hence, attachment commences

at the beginning of life. Children need an attachment to start life with a secure base with access

to care and protection, which offers them comfort and confidence to begin navigating through

the world (Shahar-Maharik & Oppenheim, 2018). As children grow up, they start the gradual

process of detachment from their parents, which begins with playing outside to adapting to days

without parental access.

Adults deal with the dynamics and challenges of life in different ways. One of the most

effective ways to cope with stress is via romantic attachments (Simpson & Rholes, 2017). Unless

adults embrace healthy attachment, they will suffer avoidance or anxiety when stressed because

they would not have anyone to connect to. Healthy levels of attachment ensure that adults know

when to find help for their psychological and emotional dilemmas. Mothers can change the status

of attachment they have to their partners when giving birth because they have a new bond with

their babies.

In summary, attachment is a natural psychosocial state which enables youngsters and

adults to cope in life. Without it, people develop dysfunctional behaviors and relationships with

others. Attachment has significant social and psychological implications on “young children and

their parents” (George et al., 2014).
