Objective :

To understand the concept of kinetics on water. Then, using that understanding on

other substances.
Hypothesis
1. Temperature affects the rate of reaction between water and tea.
2. The higher the temperature, the faster the reaction will happen to achieve a
common concentration.
Material
1. Measuring cup
2. Water
3. 4 glass
4. 4 tea bag
5. Spoon
6. Thermometer
7. Heater (in this case a stove)
8. Saucepan
9. Cooler/ Freezer
Procedures
1. Prepare all of the necessary ingredients
2. Measure 200ml of water using the measuring cup and fill all 4 glass with that
water
3. Using the stove and freezer, alter the water temperature, such as the waters
of each glass has these temperatures : 0C, 29C, 60C, 90C.
4. Use the thermometer to confirm these temperatures.
5. Drop the tea bag on the glass one by one, and start stirring for 1 minute.
6. After 1 minute, remove the tea bag, and analyze the mixture color.

Analysis
In order for the tea to spread in water, the water molecules must have a kinetic energy.
The kinetic energy of water is 0 only when water is in solid formation. As the thermal
energy increases, the kinetic energy will increase as well. This causes the water
molecules to move faster, hence spreading the tea color faster. In theory, there are 4
factors that affect the motion of molecules/atoms :
- Concentration
- Area
- Temperature
- Enzymes/ Catalyst
More heat causes more friction in the molecules. It is also important to note that
molecules do not move in an orderly manner, they move at a random direction. Hence
increasing the temperature will cause more friction and, in turn, increase the speed.

Looking at the control (un-altered) tap water, it will take longer time for the color
concentration to reach that of the 90C colour concentration.
Conclusion
Temperature affects molecule kinetics

Possible errors :
- The spoon used to stir are at different temperatures, might affect the result as a
whole
- When stirring, there are instances where there the spoon squeezes the tea bag,
which might affect the experiment
- Water evaporation during heating reduces the water volume might affect the
experiment
