Vocal Music
Vocal Music can be described as any music produced by the human voice, but is generally
differentiated from choral music, which is sung by large groups. Because its instrument is the body
itself, it is the most primal music produced by humans and is common to all cultures. It is most
frequently expressed as song, words sung to a melody.
1. The Mass - a form of sacred musical composition, is a choral composition that sets the invariable
portions of the Eucharistic liturgy (principally that of the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion,
and Lutheranism) to music.
Masses can be acappella, that is, without an independent accompaniment, or they can be
accompanied by instrumental obbligatos up to and including a full orchestra. Many Masses,
especially later ones, were never intended to be performed during the celebration of an actual mass.
Songs in Mass
a. Kyrie - is the first movement of a setting of the Ordinary of the Mass.
Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison.
Lord have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.
b. Gloria - is a celebratory passage praising God and Christ.
Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.
c. Credo – is a setting of the Nicene Creed; is the longest text of a sung Mass.
Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem,
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
3
d. Sanctus - is a doxology praising the Trinity.
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth; pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts; Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
e. Benedictus - is a continuation of the Sanctus.
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
f. Agnus Dei - is a setting of the "Lamb of God" litany.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,
2. Folk Song - a song originating among the people of a country or area, passed by oral tradition
from one singer or generation to the next, often existing in several versions and marked generally by
simple, modal melody and stanzaic, narrative verse.
Ex. Bahay Kubo, Sitsiritsit Alibangbang, Leron Leron Sinta
3. Liturgical – originated as a part of religious ceremony, and includes a number of traditions, both
ancient and modern.

5. Secular Songs – secular means being separate from. (Not associated or concerned with
religion). Secular music in the Middle Ages included love songs, political satires, dances, and
dramatic works.
Words are an important part of secular music. Words were added for most and many
common people to sing songs together for entertainment.
6. Art Music – also known as formal music, serious music, erudite music, or legitimate music (legit
music) is an umbrella term used to refer to musical traditions implying advanced structural and
theoretical considerations and a written musical tradition.
The main tradition in the Western world is usually called classical music. In this regard, it is
frequently used as a contrasting term to popular music and traditional or folk music. This term used
to refer to music descending from the tradition of Western classical music.
Examples of Art Music
5
a. Kundiman – came from the Province of Batangas. The Kundiman may be similar to Harana
because the song is dedicated to a woman. Although in Kundiman, a man is singing about his
longing for a loved one. This was also used in the Spanish Era as a means to express one’s love for
country and longing for freedom. The Kundiman was used in this way because the Spaniards did
not allow songs pertaining to patriotism.
b. Performance Practice – the way in which music is performed, especially as it relates to the
quest for the authentic style of performing the music of previous generations and eras. Its study
covers notation, ornamentation, instruments, voice production, tuning and pitch, and the size of
ensembles and choruses.
