In these questions you must choose one word from the first bracket and one word
from the second bracket on the answer sheet that best completes the sentence.

EXAMPLE: Heavy is to (light, huge, heave) as big is to (small, brag, round).

Heavy is to light as big is to small makes the most sense (opposite meanings).

ANSWER: light small

1. Brave is to (knight, cowardly, courage) as cautious is to (watch, attend, reckless).

2. Mar is to (ram, ruin, mare) as bat is to (cricket, tab, bait).

3. Fate is to (end, feat, weight) as rail is to (whale, train, irate).

4. 49 is to (30, 64, 98) as 16 is to (34, 11, 25).

5. Cave is to (cove, water, crave) as bide is to (waiter, bride, bad).

6. Glad is to (morose, content, rag) as fair is to (impartial, horse, wing)

In these questions, find two words, one from each group, that together make one
correctly spelt word, without changing the order of the letters.
The word from the first group always comes first.
Mark both words on the answer sheet.

EXAMPLE: (car, far, tar) (pet, low, put) ANSWER: car pet

Taking one word from the first bracket and one from the second bracket, car and pet
are the only words that can be joined to form a new word: carpet.

7. (per, cap, lit) (war, son, are)

8. (fan, ton, bar) (rag, run, row)

9. (can, her, win) (hoe, try, for)

10. (tea, tour, con) (ring, post, mean)

11. (font, war, set) (din, are, rant)

12. (pal, fill, fry) (tree, let, lice)

2
In these sentences, the word in capitals has had three letters next to each other
taken out.
These three letters will make one correctly spelt word without changing their order.
The sentence that you make must make sense.
Mark the correct three-letter word on the answer sheet.

EXAMPLE: “Can you hear the feet STAMG?” ANSWER: PIN (stamPINg)

The three-letter word that has been removed from STAMG is ‘PIN’.
If we place this three-letter word between M and G, it makes the word STAMPING
and this completes the sentence.

14. The BOONS identified the venue of the party.

15. The statues are safely housed in a MUM.

16. Tourism has suffered due to the PEMIC.

18. The new HAIRLE proved popular.

In these sentences, a word of four letters is hidden at the end of one word and the
beginning of the next word.
Find the pair of words that contains the hidden word and mark this on the answer
sheet.

EXAMPLE: Winnie the Pooh lived in Hundred Acre Wood. ANSWER: crew
The hidden word is ‘crew’, which is made up of the last three letters of the word ‘Acre’
and the first letter of the word ‘wood’.
So the pair of words that contains the hidden word is ‘Acre Wood’.

19. Our mouse ran behind the bookcase.

20. Rabbits love to munch on carrots.

21. The stairs are too steep for me.

22. The footballer carefully returned the ball.

23. Nobody heard the cat creep into the house.

24. The vacuum quickly cleaned up the mess.

3
In these questions, the same letter must fit into both sets of brackets, to complete the
word in front of the brackets and begin the word after the brackets.
Find this letter and mark it on the answer sheet.

EXAMPLE: fin [?] rain see [?] are ANSWER: d

The same letter that fits into both sets of brackets to form four words is ‘d’.
(The four new words are find, drain, seed and dare.

sheet.

EXAMPLE: If A = 1, B = 3, C = 4, D = 7, E = 9, what is the answer to the sum, written

as a letter?

D + B - A = [?] ANSWER: E (since 7 + 3 – 1 = 9)

31. If A = 4, B = 2, C = 3, D = 16, E = 10, what is the answer to this sum, written as a

letter? A+B+E

32. If A = 9, B = 8, C = 6, D = 5, E = 3, what is the answer to this sum, written as a

letter? A÷E+D

33. If A = 2, B = 12, C = 4, D = 8, E = 30, what is the answer to this sum, written as a

letter? CxD–A

34. If A = 8, B = 3, C = 1, D = 2, E = 4, what is the answer to this sum, written as a

letter? D+A–B–E

35. If A = 1, B = 4, C = 7, D = 0, E = 9, what is the answer to this sum, written as a

letter? (C + B) x D x A

4
In this question, one letter can be moved from the first word to the second word to
make two new words.
The letters must not otherwise be rearranged and both new words must make sense.
Find the letter that moves and mark it on the answer sheet.

The answer is ‘h’. When removed from the word ‘hill’, we get the new word ‘ill’ and
when added to ‘sow’, we get a new word ‘show’.

The answer is ‘charge’. The word ‘charge’ goes equally well with both pairs of words
because, just as it can refer to a price (fee) to be paid, it can also refer to a forward
action (stampede/rush).
