Concept: SCSI Device Change -
Discovery
• Dynamic SAN SCSI device address changes without detection causes failures
• DP will automatically discovers and updates the changed SCSI address

• Device serial number stored within the IDB

– MA retrieves the serial number during the subsequent media operation on the
device and saves it to IDB

• Reload causes a retrieval and replacement of device serial number into IDB
– Serial number field not editable

Configuration Methods
• Automatic (preferred) • Manual (GUI)
• Standalone devices • All device types available
• Libraries (SAN or SCSI) • All parameters user configured
• Two step approach • Adjust options as needed during
– select client systems configuration
– select from discovered devices
• Automatic Multipath • Manual (Command Line)
• Adjust options after • All device types available
configuration completes
• All parameters user configured
from a text file
• Adjust options as needed after
configuration uploaded into DB

Distributed File Media Format (DFMF)
• only available for file library
(DP 6.0)
– attribute within the device
(disabled by default)
• pure data blocks are put into
separate files

• file usage without DFMF

– each session creates a file that corresponds to one medium (in the repository)
• file usage with DFMF
– each session creates several files
• separate files are created holding data blocks (repository)
– consolidation sessions (virtual fulls) do not copy those data files, instead
refer them only via pointers
– catalog segments are not “outsourced”

<medium id>.rr
<medium id>.rm
Fxxxx (0000 – FFFF)
<medium id>.fd
• file medium, contains catalog and data segments
• pure data segments are outsourced to Fxxx files
<medium id>.rl
• stores all repostitory paths
<medium id>.rr
• stores references to repository data files
<medium id>.rm
• reference counter, used in order to delete Fxxx files if not used anymore by other media
Dxxxxx
• directories hosting Fxxxx files (D0000 – DFFFF)

External Control
A mechanism for controlling devices that do not
support the UNIX SCSI pass-through driver.

Data Protector sends: drive, slot, flip, load, and unload commands
to the external script.

The external script converts the commands to the native

ones required by the device and executes them.
