PARTS OF PARAGRAPH

A. Description
The aim of this unit is that the students can develop their understanding of the theory about
parts of paragraph into their writing.

B. Learning Outcome
1. The students are able to mention the parts of paragraph.
2. The students are able write a paragraph by using appropriate parts of paragraph.

C. Explanation
1. Definition
Ingram & King (2004) mention that a paragraph usually has three parts: a topic
sentence, body sentence and concluding sentence.

2. Learning Focus
The learning focus of the unit which is about parts of paragraph is to write topic
sentence, body sentence and concluding sentence in a writing.

D. Discussion
A topic sentence usually at the beginning tells the main idea of the paragraph. Body sentences
are in the middle gives supporting information about the topic sentence. While concluding
sentence is at the end restates the topic sentence.

E. Exercise
1. Underline the topic sentence, body sentence and concluding sentence of the paragraph
below:
Sometimes I feel homesick for my family. There are four people in my family. They
are my father, mother, brother and myself. My father is a teacher. He is wise and
discipline person. My mother is a housewife. She is very friendly and helpful My brother
is a senior high school student. They make me happy every day because they love me.

F. Evaluation
1. Write about your family by paying attention parts of paragraph you have learned!
