What does a good simple paragraph look like? Most simple paragraphs will include: a topic sentence,
several supporting

the reader what the main idea of the paragraph is, i.e., the topic and focus of the paragraph.
Look again at the example paragraphs you have seen in this book. Look at the topic sentences.
The topic is the writer’s trip to Egypt, and the focus is that it was his or her best ever vacation.
The topic is the writer’s family, and the focus is why the family members are wonderful.
The supporting sentences give examples, explanation, information and opinion to support the main idea
of the paragraph. Therefore, all supporting sentences should help the reader to understand the topic and
focus of the sentence.
Look again at the example paragraphs you have seen in this book. Look at the supporting sentences.
In Unit 1: We spent the first three days in Cairo and from there we visited the Pyramids and the Sphinx.
The Pyramids were amazing.
In Unit 2: I love everyone in my family very much. My mum is very kind and looks after all of the family.
All of these example sentences support the main idea of the paragraph.

The concluding sentence is the last sentence in the paragraph. It is often similar to the topic sentence and
reminds the reader of the topic and focus of the paragraph, but it should use different words, if possible.

Imagine that your teacher has asked you to write a paragraph about the following topics:

Think of three different topic sentences for each topic. Each topic sentence should focus on the topic in a
different way.
Computers
Computers, the technological marvels that have revolutionized our world, are omnipresent in
our daily lives. These electronic devices, capable of processing vast amounts of information at
incredible speeds, serve as the backbone of the modern digital age.
At their core, computers consist of hardware components such as processors, memory, storage
devices, and input/output peripherals. The sleek designs of personal computers, laptops, and
tablets showcase the evolution of computing devices, becoming increasingly compact and
powerful.
Software, the digital soul of computers, encompasses operating systems, applications, and
programs that enable users to perform a myriad of tasks. From word processing to complex
data analysis, computers empower individuals and businesses to achieve unprecedented levels
of productivity.
The advent of the internet further amplifies the capabilities of computers, connecting people
globally and providing access to a vast repository of information. Cloud computing takes this
connectivity a step further, allowing users to store and access data remotely.
In the realm of artificial intelligence, computers exhibit the ability to learn, reason, and problem-
solve, pushing the boundaries of what was once thought possible. From machine learning
algorithms to sophisticated neural networks, computers continue to redefine the landscape of
innovation.
As we navigate the digital landscape, it's impossible to overlook the profound impact computers
have had on shaping our society. They stand as testament to human ingenuity, facilitating
progress, communication, and exploration in ways that were once unimaginable.
Quiz 1 – Find the topic sentence
Look at Quiz 1 on the DVD. For each task you will see four sentences. One sentence is the topic sentence
and the other three sentences are supporting sentences. You must decide which sentence is the topic
sentence.
Supporting sentences
1. Learning English is very difficult. Firstly, mastering its intricate grammar rules
poses a significant challenge. In addition, the vast vocabulary and numerous idiomatic
expressions can be overwhelming for learners Also, the diverse accents and regional
variations make understanding spoken English a complex task. Finally, the con stant
evolution of th e langu ag e with n ew p hrases and expression s add s an oth er
layer of difficulty Despite th ese ch alleng es, I am d etermin ed to
persevere and enh an ce my lan gu ag e sk ills . I think it will take a long
time to learn English well. I believe that consistent practice, exposure,

2. I hate my job. For one thing, the work environment is toxic, and
the constant negativity is draining. Another thing is that the workload
is overwhelming leaving me with little time for personal life. Also,
the lack of appreciation from management makes the situation even
more demoralizing. However,the worst thing is that the job does not
align with my skills and passions, leading to a profound sense
of dissatisfaction I think it’s time to look for a new job.
When you have finished, check your answers with your teacher.
Write T1 and T2 in the boxes for each topic sentence. Write S1 in the boxes for each of the
sentences that support T1. Write S2 in the boxes for all of the sentences that support T2. Write IR in
the boxes for all of the irrelevant sentences.

After you have seen the slideshow, write a paragraph about the house. Imagine you live in that house. Your
paragraph should have a topic sentence and several supporting sentences.
My house is awful
My house is a haven of simplicity and comfort. Nestled in a quiet
neighborhood, it exudes a sense of warmth and familiarity. The
exterior, painted in a tranquil shade, welcomes guests with an
unassuming charm. A neatly kept front yard, adorned with a few
resilient plants, adds a touch of nature.
