QUANTITATIVE: (2 points)

II. DO THIS EXPERIMENT!

Problem: Given two identical sized candles, each one covered with jar of different size, which candle lasts
longer?

Complete the hypothesis:

If each candle is covered, the candle with big jar __If each candle covered, the candle covered with
big jar last longer.
(2 points)
Now test your hypothesis!

Materials: 2 small identical sized candles

2 mayonnaise glass jars of different size stopwatch
Procedures:
1. Prepare 2 identical sized candle and 2 glass jars of different size.
2. Mount each candle on a flat surface and light them using matchstick.
3. Cover each candle with each jar simultaneously. Have someone act as a timekeeper. Ensure
that both jars are covered at the same time.

4. OBSERVE and record the time started and time ended. (4 points)
Set-up Time Started Time Ended
Candle A (covered with small jar) 10:25:00 10:25:10
Candle B (covered with big jar) 10:25:00 10:25:18

5. Question: Which candle lasts longer, why?

Answer: (3 points)
The candle covered with big jar lasts longer because when the candle is closed with
the glass jar the oxygen supply is stopped longer than the small one. Initially, the
candle burns by making use of the oxygen within the glass and
slowly when there is no oxygen the flame goes off. The larger the space is, the

longer the fire lit will stay.
DOCUMENTATION: (Insert four (4) pictures below of you doing the experiment.) 4 points

REMEMBER!

A hypothesis is a tentative answer/solution to a problem.

It has 2 parts: CONDITION (starts with If or when) and
PREDICTION (possible outcome).

A hypothesis can be accepted or rejected. It can be validated through an experiment.

2|SCIENCE ACTIVITY SHEET
It is important to conduct an experiment to prove that the hypothesis is correct.
