Jan Ingenhousz Experiment

Beatriks M.B
XII-Science/2
Jan Ingenhousz (1730-1799) found that plants only produce oxygen when exposed to light and
conclude that plants need light to produce oxygen.
Materials:
• 2 Beaker glass
• 2 Test tube
• Some Hydrilla plant
• 2 Funnel glass
• Enough Water
• Enough Wire
• A box
Procedure:
1. Fill the beaker with 2/3 full of water.
2. Put the Hydrilla plant in the funnel glass.
3. Set the wire in the beaker glass.
4. Put the funnel glass upside down into the beaker glass.
5. Fill the test tube with full of water and then put it upside down to the funnel glass.
6. Put the beaker glass to a place that exposed by sunlight.
7. Do step one to five again then put the second beaker in a box.
8. Close the box and wait about 1 hour and see the difference.

The result:
The hydrilla which is put on the first beaker glass, produces more bubbles (oxygen) then the
second hydrilla in the beaker glass which is put in a box. So we can conclude this experiment
has proven that plants need light to produce oxygen.
