• Photosynthesis

 A process by which plants converts light energy into chemical energy

in the presence of chlorophyll to produce glucose and oxygen

○ Plants make food with it

○ "making with light"

○ Photo -> light
○ Synthesis-> making

○ Things required for Photosynthesis

a. Water from soil
b. Carbon Dioxide from air
c. Energy from sunlight
d. Minerals from soil

▪ Process

1. Takes place in the leaves of the plants

2. Chlorophyll captures energy from sunlight

3. Plants take in Carbon Dioxide from the air through tiny holes in
their leaves

4. Roots Absorb water from soil which travels up the stem

through Xylem

Biology Page 1
5. Carbon Dioxide and water are combined in a chemical reaction
using the energy

6. Glucose formed

7. Oxygen released

▪ Equation

a. Word Equation

sunlight
Carbon Dioxide + water → Glucose + Oxygen
chlorophyll

b. Chemical equation

sunlight
6Co2 + 6HO → C6 H12 O6 + 6O2
chlorophyll

c. Reactants → Carbon Dioxide and water

d. Products → Glucose and Oxygen

▪ Importance

a) Provides energy in the form of chemical energy in nutrients

for most other organisms

b) Plants are the base of the food chain, providing food for
animals, including us. Without oxygen there will be no transfer
of energy

c) Provides oxygen for the Earth's atmosphere

□ Experiment

1) Experiment1 : Collecting gas produced in Photosynthesis

→ Equipment
◊ Testube
◊ Beaker
◊ Water or pond water
◊ Upside down funnel
◊ Block ( to support funnel
◊ Water plant

→ Steps

◊ Set apparatus

◊ Place apparatus where sunlight is being provided

and leave for at least 1 day

◊ When gas collected put hand into the beaker

filled with water and carefully remove the tube
from the top of the funnel. Keep the opening of
the tube under the water to prevent gas from
escaping.

◊ Put thumb over the end of the tube

◊ Take tube out of water and keep it upside down

◊ Move thumb a bit so that water runs out of the

Biology Page 3
◊ Move thumb a bit so that water runs out of the
tube but gas stays inside

◊ Push stopper in tube

◊ Place in Testube rack

◊ Oxygen supports burning so we can use this fact

for evidence by lighting a splint then blow it out
so that its glowing

◊ If gas contains a lot of oxygen, splint will relight

→ Precautions:

◊ Use water plant for easier gas collection and

visible water bubbles

◊ While finding evidence, try not to touch the wet

sides of the test tube as splint will extinguish

2. Experiment: 2, Investigating how light intensity affects

the rat of Photosynthesis
