Lewis observes that an alleged connection between Libra and Augustu

in Geo. 1.32-35 is the result of Servius' misinterpretation. Augustus
horoscope more correctly shows an emphasis on Virgo, an emphasis
which appears to be reflected on the Tellus relief of the Ara Pacis, th
breastplate of the Prima Porta Augustus, and the Gemma Augustea.
Marco Simón mentions an inscription from the late first century bc o
early first century ad at the Spanish site of Peñalba de Villastar whic
bears two lines from the Aeneid (2.268-69). Paoletta discusses VergiPs
references in Eel. 4 to Horace; in Geo. 4 to Cornelius Gallus; and in Aen.

Vergilian Bibliography 2010-2011

Borghini offers the conjecture "et matan uitatas umbras" at Petronius

62.7 on the basis of Aen. 6.290-94. Chinnici discusses Calpurnius Siculus'
allusions to Vergil. Gärtner 2008 observes that Statius' epilogue alludes
to Lucan 9.980-86 and thus imitates Vergil; Gärtner 2010 argues that
the structure of Silius' Punica alludes in several ways to the structure of
the Aeneid. Gasti is concerned with Faustus of Riez (ca. ad 405-ca. 490).
Hulls shows that Ammianus5 unusual phrase "raising the standards of
his obstinacy" at 14.1.10, describing the Caesar Gallus, is framed by a
double allusion to Aen. 2.304-7 and 2.496-99 and must be a reference
to a description of the emperor Domitian at Statius, Silv. 4.2. Magnelli
discusses Calpurnius Siculus' main models, Theocritus and Vergil.
Marshall demonstrates that Statius, Silv. 1.1 alludes to epic, and to the
Aeneid in particular. Mazzucco touches on women's writing of Vergilian
centones. Risi shows that Silius5 character Podaetus is a literary invention
which owes much to Vergil's Achilles and to the Achilles of Statius'
Achilleid. Van Mal-Maeder examines Endelechius' fourth-century ad poem
De mortibus boum and discusses its debt to Vergil's Eclogues and Georgics ,
which are themselves indebted to Lucretius. Vieira discusses Lucan's
dependence on Aen. 8.190-272. Wulff Alonso studies the reception of
Homer, especially of the Iliad, in ancient India; in an appendix, he explores
the possible relationship between the Mababharata and the Aeneid.

Itsumi observes that, since ancient didactic poetry was considered to

rather than generic model. Vergil and Ovid seem to be exceptions in their
awareness of the genre they helped to create.

The humanists discussed by Bouscharain are Battista Spagnoli (1447-

1516); the printer Josse Bade (beginning of the sixteenth century); and
the court poet Michel ďAmboise (whose translation dates to 1530). II
viaggio d'Enea by Busenello (1598-1659) is a dramatic work. Casanova-
Robin writes about Giovanni Pontano, who wrote Latin eclogues in
the years 1463-1496 on themes borrowed from Vergil and other poets.
Dewar- Watson suggests that Shakespeare's Othello , which alludes to the
Aeneid , may also have been influenced by Montaigne's essay "Of the
Caniballes," which quotes from Aen. 3. Fleck writes on the Life of Vergil
published by Jan van Doesborch (d. 1536) of Antwerp. Galperin considers
the Spanish epic poet Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga (1533-1594). Kundert
writes about the reception of Vergil's first, fourth, and ninth Eclogues.
Thomas Murner (1475-ca. 1537), discussed by Redzich, was a German
satirist and translator. Tabárez investigates the authorship of a collation
of the Eclogues wrongly attributed to Juan Luis de la Cerda (1558-1643).
Wallace posits a relationship between Vergil as a theorist of teaching and
the pedagogical practices of Renaissance England.

Cummings discusses the inclusion of Sannazaro's Eclogae piscatoriae

(written in the Vergilian tradition) in late seventeenth-century neo-Latin
anthologies and the attraction this work had for English translators.
Money focuses on the themes of love, names, and politics in Vergilian-
inspired poems written in the period 1685-1714. Trevizam offers an
analysis of the Aeneid translation published by Barreto in the seventeenth
century and how this is mediated by the work of the Portuguese poet
Luís Vaz de Camões.

Sala del Consiglio of the Palazzo Comunale in Lucignano. L'Occaso
discusses a second-century ad mosaic from the Castra Praetoria, now in
the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale Vittorio Emanuele II, which bears the
label "Tityrus." Thomas writes about Balanchine's Duo concertant and the
influence of Vergil's Eclogues on Stravinsky's music for that ballet. Walde
posits that a sculptural group from Sperlonga (Museo Archeologico
Nazionale, inv. A 1, 10) which includes three piglets may represent the
prodigy of the sow described in Aen. 3.389-93 and 8.42-48.
