(1)(a) Define following terms giving an example for each.

i. Statistic
ii. Parameter
iii. Estimator
iv. Estimate
v. Point estimation
vi. Interval estimation

(b) In a charcoal manufacturing company, an experiment was done to assess the

efficiency of an old machine. That machine fills the charcoal into the large bags.
Quality Assistant of this company collected a random sample of 10 bags which fill
charcoal by old machine. Weights of each bag were measured in tones.

3.1, 3.5, 3.3, 3.7, 4.5, 4.2, 2.8, 3.9, 3.5, 3.3

Find the sample mean, sample variance and standard deviation of X.

(c) A researcher collected 64 same water bags to determine iron concentration of a

river. According to his experiment, he found standard deviation 1.6 mg/𝑚3 and
mean of 90 mg/𝑚3 . Pure water should contain the iron in between 88 mg/𝑚3 and
92 mg/𝑚3 . Does the 95% confidence interval contain the true mean concentration
of that river?

(2) (a) A sociologist has predicted that, minimum of 40% votes will receive for
previous president in the upcoming election. A random sample of 200 individuals
from the voting population, 75 state they will likely vote.

i. Define the hypothesis related to this question.

ii. Determine acceptance of the hypothesis with a significance level of
5%.
iii. Obtain the 95% confidence interval.

(b) In a chess tournament, average amount of time boys and girls ages 10 through
12 spend for chess game each day and the standard deviation are as follows.
Assume both populations have a normal distribution.

Sample Size Average Number of Hours Sample Standard

Playing Sports Per Day Deviation
Girls 9 2 hours √0.75
Boys 16 3.2 hours 1.00
Is there a difference in the mean amount of time boys and girls ages 10 through 12
play chess each day? Test at the 5% level of significance.

(3) (a) Blood pressure(mm Hg) and sugar level (mg/dL) of 10 cricket players on a
team are as follows;

Blood pressure (X) 186 189 190 192 193 193 198 201 203 205

Sugar level (Y) 85 85 86 90 87 91 93 103 100 101

(i) Construct a scatter plot of sugar level (Y) versus blood pressure (X).

Calculate:

(ii) The regression line of y on x.

(iii) The coefficient of correlation.

(iv) The estimated blood pressure of a player who measures 208 mg/dL.

(b)The government surveys 101 randomly selected customers. For each survey
participant, the statistical officer collects the following: annual electric bill (in
dollars) and home size (in square feet). Output from a regression analysis
appears below.

(i) Write down the regression equation.

(ii) Is there a significant linear relationship between annual bill and home size?
Use a 5% level of significance.

(4) (a) Explain the difference between simple linear regression and multiple linear
regression.

(b) Consider the table below. It shows three performance measures for five
students.

Student Test Score IQ Study hours

1 100 110 40
2 90 120 30
3 80 100 20
4 70 90 0
5 60 80 10

Using least squares regression, develop a regression equation to predict test score,
based on (1) IQ and (2) the number of hours that the student studied.
