I.MULTIPLE CHOICE: Write the letter on the space before the answer:
___b____1. Condensation (a. is the opposite process of melting b. is an exothermic process c.
is due to the increase in the kinetic energy of the particles of the liquid d. all of the above).
___a____2. If the pressure of water is increased, the boiling water will be (a. higher than 1000C
b. equal to 100 o C c. lower than 100 o C. d. none of the above).
___b____3. When ice melts at 0 o C, ( a. the temperature remains constant because no heat is
absorbed b. the heat energy absorbed is used to break the crystal lattice of the ice c. the water
produced is at its densest d. its temperature immediately jumps to 4 0 C) .
___a____4. The space between the walls of a double-walled thermos bottle is evacuated (a. to
reduce heat transfer by conduction b. to reduce convection c. to increase volume d. both a
and b).
___c____5.Room temperature is often identified as 68 0 F. What temperature is this on Kelvin
scale? ( a. 20 K b. 100 K c. 293 K d. 341 K)
____a___6. As more heat is added to a sample of water boiling in a stove, its temperature
(a.remains the same b. increases c. decreases d. increases, then decreases).
___d____7. The rate of evaporation may be increased by ( a. raising the temperature of the liquid
b. increasing the surface area of the liquid c. decreasing the air pressure on the surface of the
liquid d. any of the above).
___d____8. Boiling ( a. takes place when bubbles begin to appear in the liquid. b. is the same
for all liquids at the same temperature c. is slower than evaporation d. takes place at a
definite temperature).
___c____9. The transfer of energy from a source to an object by direct contact between them is
( a. convection b. radiation c. conduction d. insulation).
___a____10.A change in pressure ( a. changes the freezing point of water b. has no effect on
the freezing point of water c. will lower the boiling point of water, if the pressure is decreased.
d. will raise the freezing point above O o C ).
The table top would be much hotter than the glass pane because of the greenhouse effect.
Glass has low thermal conductivity, but is also transparent. So the sun light enters the transparent
window, turns into heat, and then the heat cannot leave outside. Turning the inside of the room
and also the table top much hotter.
23– 24.Why do woollen blankets keep us warm better than cotton sheets?
Answer:
It is because woollen blankets have many layers while the cotton sheet has only
one layer so it traps more heat.
25 – 26. What is the main difference between external combustion engine and an
external combustion engine?
Answer:
External engines have the combustion of fuel take place outside the cylinder. Its working
fluid is steam and requires a large space and can have a relatively high capital cost. While the
internal combustion engine has the combustion takes place inside the cylinder. Its working fluid
maybe petrol, diesel and various types of gases. It requires less space and have a relatively low
capital cost.
27– 28. Why is gasoline engine more advantageous to use than the diesel engine?
Answer:
The gasoline engine is more advantageous to use than the diesel engine because the
low emissions without requiring extensive emission control equipment/devices. The
gasoline engine is lightweight and comparatively small in size than diesel engine. It has
low service and repair cost than diesel engine.
29 -30. As a student in science, how will you help in reducing the environmental
pollution cause by heat engines? Cite four most important ways.
Answer:
As a student in science, I can help in reducing the environmental pollution cause by heat
engines by walking rather than riding vehicles on short distance. Taking public vehicles rather
than using a private vehicle. If using a vehicle I can ride with my friends instead of driving alone.
Lastly, planning ahead especially when buying something. Going back and forth because I forgot
something can greatly contribute to the environmental pollution.
46 - 50. How many joules of work is the equivalent of 15,000 cal of heat?
0000OOOO0000
