Experiment No. 12: PCB Layout Design using Proteus (ISIS to ARES) Page 1
Objective:
 To become familiar with PCB layout design using Proteous (ISIS to ARES).
Equipment Required:
 as instructed by your teacher
Theory:
Proteus is a software combination of ISIS schematic capture program and ARES PCB
layout program. This is a powerful and integrated development environment. In this lab
session, we will design a PCB layout using ISIS (Schematic) to ARES (PCB) conversion
method.
Procedure:
a. Open Proteous/ISIS software and select “New Design” in file menu as shown in Figure
12.1. Note that, there is a blue rectangular line in the workspace; make sure that whole
circuit is designed inside the rectangular space.

a. Next step is to select the components for the desired circuit. Let us take an example to
design a 38-kHz frequency generator using 555 timer IC. The circuit diagram is shown in
Figure 12.2.

b. In the above circuit, the required components include 555 timer IC, 470-Ω and 22-kΩ
resisters, 10-kΩ variable resister, 0.001µF capacitor, one LED (IR) and DC power supply
(+5V). Select the components from “Pick Devices” library as shown in Figure 12.3.

c. Select all the components from the library and add them to the devices list as shown in
Figure 12.4.

d. Click on the particular component/device and change its orientation using rotate buttons.
Connect all the components according to desired circuit diagram using wiring tool.

Figure 12.5
e. To modify the properties/parameters of any component, select the component, right click
and select the “Edit Properties” option as shown in Figure 12.6. You can edit the
parameters according to your requirements.

f. After the completion of circuit design in Proteous/ISIS, save and debug it.
PCB Layout Designing:
g. Now we are going to design a PCB layout of the above circuit. Proteus has the
integrated ARES PCB designing suit. After simulating your circuit design in
Proteous/ISIS, click on “PCB Layout” button to open the ARES window as shown in
Figure 12.7.

Figure 12.7
h. Then, a workspace window will appears with a list of component packages as shown in
Figure 12.8.

i. Next, click on the “Layer Selector” button located at the bottom left corner and select the
“board edge” option as shown in Figure 12.9.

Figure 12.9
j. Now, create a board edge by selecting “2D Graphics Box Mode” option and draw a
yellow box as shown in Figure 12.10. The circuit should be inside of that yellow box.

k. Place the components on the workspace. After adding all components to the workspace,
arrange the position of the components properly in the workspace. Next, click on the
component name and change the angle of the component using “rotation” options, if
required.

l. After placing all components in correct position, next thing is the tracking. Tracking
means establishing the connection between the components with a copper layer. First
select the “track mode” and change the track width by clicking “C” (create) or “E” (edit)
buttons as shown in Figure 12.11. When, we click on the button C or E, immediately a
window will open. Select the width of the track from the given list.

Figure 12.11
m. After setting the track width, click on the one end of component and follow the green
line. When two components are successfully connected, the green line will be removed
automatically.
n. There are several types of PCBs including single layer, dual layer or multi layer PCBs.
In single layer PCBs, components are placed at one side and tracking is done on the
other side of board. In dual layer PCBs, tracking is done on both sides and components
are also placed on both sides. In dual PCBs, mostly SMD components are used. Finally,
multi layered PCBs have many layers including top and bottom layers, and remaining all
are inner layers. The layer selection button in Proteus is located at left down corner. Each
layer is represented with a unique color. For example bottom layer is represented with
blue color, top layer is represented with red and inner layers are represented with
different colors as shown in Figure 12.12.

o. The correct connections are indicated with green line and blue line indicates the track. If
any contact error is occurred while tracking, those are represented with red circles. To
avoid such errors, change the track path, arrange the tracks between the pins without
errors.
p. Auto-router is a special tool to arrange tracks automatically without errors. When we
select this tool, auto router window will be opened, having an execution mode, design
rules and grid width changing options. By changing all the options according to our
requirement, click on the “begin routing” button, it will start the automatic routing.

q. Figure 12.14 shows the single layer PCB design of our required circuit. After the
completion of tracking, save the project file.

r. To see the outlook of the PCB layout, click on output in menu bar and then select “3D
visualization”. Then, the circuit visualization will be opened in a window. It has features
of all angles visualization, component less board view, and back layer view as shown in
Figure 12.15.
