Binge-Watching or Reading Marathon?

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” This is how Margaret Fuller envision the value of
reading. The more you read, the more things you’ll know, the more you learn, the more places
you’ll go. The more we read the more chance of gaining knowledge that will be the key points for
us to be successful in life. Reading has always been the most special skills that should be
developed by each and everyone, especially the students like me. Reading give us the access to
navigate the world without moving.

We are always interested in books if we became attracted by the cover page it has, the
colorful illustration, the wonderful graphics, and the like. We always got to imagine the things
like, how amazing that story will be. Will it be better if it is in a movie adaptation? Personally,
would you rather binge –watch a series or would you rather dive in your bed and read physical
books?

Most of the time books are better than movies. Books let us imagine the setting or events
happening in the story. I can also say that; books are also more detailed than movies because
movies sometimes leave out some important details that a book has. Some of the factors that
affects the good quality of information and knowledge it has in books is that; in some movies,
they switch up the characters because in the book they are different and totally the opposite.
When we read a book, we tend to visualize the characters a certain way and in movies they don’t
look like the way we want them too. It disappoints us in many ways. From my personal
experienced, the way they describe a person or one’s character comes out a big different from
what is shown in the movie. I also have read books before that have a plot twist at the end but
sadly in the movie it never happens.

Movies tend to last for just about two hours and a maximum of three to four- hours and
books take their time and last longer. There are certain advantages and disadvantages about
books and movies. Movies rush things so that they can end it fast and there. Not everyone has
access to movies or can afford going to movie theatres but books can be borrowed at the library
or from a friend. Books are also portable and can be read online as well, anytime, anywhere.
When reading books, we get more knowledge and it helps us improve and even expand our
vocabulary. Characters are described much better and with much more detail to satisfy the
expectations of the readers. One important thing that books do have and movies don’t is that
they provide more background information than a movie does. Ever since the dawn of cinema,
films have been this an intellectual medium of novel. And many film adaptations of literature
leave viewers and critics say, “The book was better.” And I, myself, do agree 100% because the
books will always be better than any adaptation because it is always better at its first state.

So what makes a good adaptation, especially of a great or popular book just like my
favorite series Harry Potter? Can an adaptation ever really live up to the story we ever had
imagined and formed in our head? Is movie really better? Books will always be the best and I
know a true reader could agree with me. Furthermore, a movie can accomplish what a books can
offer and they can show it in a more exciting way, especially if the characters that will portray
are one of our favorite artist. Moreover, books never gets old, knowledge are forever never will it
rot.
