Coronavirus: Already a major disruptive Robot Competition. The competition

invites classes and school groups to design
space exploration robots using a specially
event to global supply chains created application or online, and is open
to groups of pupils aged 8-14. Each group
needs to create three virtual robots that
can move across challenging space
environments and complete a range of
tasks. Schools can enter by downloading
the augmented reality (AR) app, found on
the Apple App Store and Google Play, or
by using the web-based version. The
competition will be accepting entries until
midnight on 8 May.

Precision engineering firm ABB COLUMN

appoints first female MD, Jo Davis 2020 VISION WITH ROBOTS

As Christmas fades away into a distant
memory, food manufacturers across the
country are looking ahead to 2020
seasonal demands, such as Mother’s
Day and Easter.
80 million Easter eggs are sold every
year in the UK, showing no signs that the celebration is
slowing down. To keep up with the industry boom during
these busy periods, UK food manufacturers should ensure
they’re running a flexible and effective production
process, not only to keep up with larger quantities of
products but also cater for special dietary requirements.
In January we saw the ever-growing participation of
‘Veganuary’, where more than 350,000 individuals signed
up to become vegan for one month in January - a
massive increase of 100,000 people from 2019 . The
growing trend and lifestyle inspired leading fast-food
restaurants such as KFC and McDonald’s to offer vegan-
friendly products on its menus. This is a classic example
of giant food brands responding to the need for
diversification in the market. Other UK food
manufacturers can easily follow suit.
Many manufacturers are adapting production, using
robots to cater for veganism and other dietary
requirements. Panda Confectionary in Finland makes
vegan liquorice and supplies many UK supermarkets. It’s
production facility in Denmark uses collaborative robots
to package pick and mix products, leading to higher
productivity and greater adaptability. In today’s
unpredictable market, with alternative products
continually being introduced, UK food manufacturers
have much to gain from following this example.
Having an ethical and sustainable brand is also of
growing importance as more and more of us become
environmentally conscientious; using robots can help
deliver sustainability in 2020. With many businesses
looking to become more eco-friendly, both
manufacturers and retailers can use robots to perform
highly repetitive tasks in a logistics environment.
Additionally, by implementing such technology to its
distribution centres, the Coop Group has drastically
reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10,000
tons a year.
Whatever the industry, having clear 20/20 vision in
2020 and exploring the benefits of robotic automation,
flexibility, sustainability and productivity can be
achieved. Growing with robots has never been so simple.

INDUSTRY UPDATE

UK industry needs to be ‘bold and brave’

urges manufacturing boss
T he time has come for UK manufacturing to be ‘bold and brave’ in the way it
targets international opportunities according to the boss of a strategic
manufacturing outsourcing specialist.
PP Control & Automation’s Tony Hague made the rallying call after GDP figures
revealed that growth in the economy had stalled and manufacturing output was falling.
The CEO is urging more companies to invest in automation and to proactively
target export contracts after his own business announced a £3m order haul and
exciting plans for further growth both domestically and in North America.
It is an approach that the Government is keen for other manufacturers to
replicate as it looks to reinforce the UK’s reputation as an industrial powerhouse.
“We have definitely noticed an increase in confidence since the General Election
result and it appears that investment has been switched on in a lot of sectors, which
is very pleasing,” explained Tony Hague.
“From our base here in the UK, we support 25 of the world’s largest machinery
builders in food processing and packaging, printing, machine tool, energy, transport
and infrastructure, medical and high technology sectors.
“Everything we do has to create added value to our clients through innovative
design, proactive supply chain management and competitive and agile manufacturing.”
He continued: “We are targeting emerging markets in the UK, such as
electrification, as well as new opportunities in different geographies. In particular
the North American markets, where we are well placed with 20+ years knowledge of
legislation and associated UL standards. There are also the connections we have in
place now through our investment partners Ardenton Capital.
“Despite the figures out this week, I believe it is exciting times for industry, but
we have to work collectively and collaboratively to grow GDP and wealth.
