What’s In

In the previous lesson, you have understood the four communicative

styles that give you awareness when relating to others and help build strong
relationships.
Let us try how well you’ve learned by answering the following questions
below:
1. What is the style of communication?
2. What is the difference between casual and conversational speech
style?
3. In what situation does intimate speech style applicable?
4. When to use consultative speech style?

What’s New

with this module.
 Communication – the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions,
or information by speech, writing, or signs (Dictionary.com, 2020)

historic language or communication that is intended to remain
unchanged, like a constitution or prayer (Nordquist, 2020)
 Style- a manner of doing something (Oxford English Dictionary, 2020)
 Static – not moving or changing (Vocabulary.com, 2020)

something (OED, 2020)

What is It

Frozen Speech Style

Have you experienced leading or joining a prayer before your class
starts? Have you sung Lupang Hinirang or recited the Panatang Makabayan
during the flag ceremony? If you are a campus journalist, have you declaimed
The Journalist’s Creed?
If you have experienced any of those above, you have exhibited frozen
speech style. According to Martin Joos (1967), frozen speech style refers to
the highest form of communication style which is used in respectful situations
or formal ceremonies. Richard Nordquist (2020) further defines frozen speech
style as historic language or communication that is intended to remain
unchanged.
Examples of Frozen Speech Style
1. National Anthem – a patriotic song officially adopted by a country as
expression of national identity (OED, 2020) e. g “Star Spangled Banner”
(USA), and “Lupang Hinirang” (Philippines).
2. Patriotic Oath (Panatang Makabayan) and Pledge of Allegiance to the
Philippine Flag (Panunumpa ng Katyapatan sa Watawat ng Pilipinas) –
are the two national pledges of the Philippines commonly recited at
school flag ceremonies after singing the national anthem
(KapitBisig.com, 2020)
3. Prayer – worshipful address to God (Insight from the Scriptures, 2020)
e.g. “The Lord’s Prayer,” “Oratio Imperata,” and “Three O’Clock Prayer.”
4. Preamble - is a brief introduction to a speech (Vocabulary.com, 2020)
e.g. The Preamble of the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the
Philippines.
5. Creed –a system of principles and beliefs (Vocabulary.com, 2020) e.g.
“The Journalist’s Creed,” and “Apostles’ Creed.”
6. Wedding Officiant Speech – a speech of the officiating priest or minister
during the wedding e.g. “By the power of your love and commitment, and
the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife!
(Danielle, 2019)”
7. Motto - a short sentence or phrase chosen as encapsulating the beliefs
or ideals guiding an individual, family, or institution (OED, 2020) e.g.
“Honesty is the best policy.”
8. Oath - a verbal promise to tell the truth e.g. "I swear (or the person taking
the oath may promise) by Almighty God (or the person may name a god
recognized by his or her religion) that the evidence I shall give will be the
truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth." (Court Services Victoria,
2014)
9. Affirmation- a verbal, solemn and formal declaration, which is made in
place of an oath e.g. "I solemnly and sincerely declare and affirm that
the evidence I shall give will be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but
the truth." (Court Services Victoria, 2014)
