MODULE 3: Judging the Relevance and Worth of Ideas, Soundness of Author’s Reasoning, and the
Effectiveness of the Presentation
Reporting on Another Person’s Speech (Reported Speech)
Every day, you encounter situations that require you to restate what another person says, asks, commands, or
requests. As such, you need to reinforce your skill in reporting statements, questions, and requests or commands.
A reported speech is derived from a sentence consisting of two parts: the explanatory part and the quoted
part. The explanatory part explains or tells who says, asks, commands, or requests. On the other hand, the quoted
part shows the exact words of the speaker.
Direct Speech

1. The teacher says, “The computer has all the answers to all our questions.”
2. The student asked, “Can it solve mathematical problems?”
Indirect Speech or Reported Speech
1. The teacher says that the computer has all the answers to all our questions.
2. The student asked if the computer could solve mathematical problems.
Rules in Changing Direct Speech to Indirect Speech
1. When the quoted part is declarative, it is transformed into a “that clause”.
Example: Indirect Speech: Mr. Florendo says, “The computer has all the answers to all our
questions.”
Reported: Mr. Florendo says that the computer has all the answers to all out
questions.
2. When the quoted part is interrogative, it is transformed according to the following:
a. If the quoted part is a “yes” or “no” question, it is transformed into an “if-clause” or “whether
clause.”
Example: Indirect James asks, “Is the computer a thinking machine?”
Reported: James asks if the computer is a thinking machine.
James asks whether the computer is a thinking machine or not.
b. If the quoted interrogative part is any of the WH-questions, it is transformed by switching the places
of the subject and the verb.
Example: Indirect Jerome asks, “What are your plans?”
Reported: Jerome asks what my plans are.
3. The verb in the quoted part should be consistent in tense with the verb in the introductory part.
- A present tense of verb in the introductory part calls for a present tense verb in the quoted part.
Example: Jane says, “I enjoy computer lessons.” Reported: - Jane says that she enjoys her computer
lessons.
- A present tense verb in the introductory part and a present perfect tense in the quoted part retains
the present tense in the reported speech.
Example: Mary says, “We have tried hard to solve the problem.”
Reported: - Mary says that they have tried hard to solve the problem.
- A past tense in the introductory part and a present tense in the quoted part needs a change from the
present tense in the quoted part to past tense.
Example: Jimmy said, “The orientation program is successful.”
Reported: - Jimmy said that the orientation program was successful.
- For a past tense in the introductory part and a present perfect tense in the quoted part, change the
present perfect tense into past perfect tense.
Example: Eddie said, “The graduates last year have already found good paying jobs.
Reported: - Eddie said that the graduates last year had already found good paying job
4. The pronouns in the quoted part are replaced accordingly:
- You with I or we if it is used as a subject.
Example: Jimmy asks, “What course do you take up in college?”
Reported: Jimmy asks what course I take up in college.
- You with me or us if it is used as an object.
Example: Tom asks, “What inspires you in your studies?”
Reported: - Tom asks what inspires me in my studies.

MODULE 4: Judging the Relevance and Worth of Ideas, Soundness of Author’s Reasoning, and the
Effectiveness of the Presentation (How to Test the Relevance, Soundness, and Presentation of
Ideas?)

Here are three things that we must analyze critically to know the relevance of the author’s ideas.
1. INTRODUCTION It refers to the first paragraph of a composition that tells a story, provides
statistics, and discusses exciting quotes that always get the reader’s interest and make him/her
engage in reading the whole composition. In the introduction, we must identify the thesis
statement, which is stated in one or two sentences. Thesis statement pertains to the roadmap of
the composition, for it tells what we expect to see, just like a bird’s eye view of the rest of the
essay.
2. BODY It proves the thesis statement, which includes the author’s reasons and pieces of evidence.
This supports the general idea and shows the clarity of the written work. We must go beyond and
identify the author's ideas and evidence to judge the quality of the author’s work.
If the evidence is not reliable, it is unlikely that the claims will be acceptable. Evidence may be
briefly referred to in the abstract but will undoubtedly be provided in the article's body. Look for
tables and graphs - these will often provide data/statistics. Citations will display evidence in the
form of quotations or paraphrasing from other experts, and case studies may be used as examples
to illustrate a more general claim.
• Quotation: This evidence is represented word for word from a primary or secondary source.
• Paraphrase: This evidence explains someone’s ideas using his/her own terms.
• Fact: This evidence comes from a credible source.
• Summary: You need to summarize a piece of evidence by restating it in a shorter form using your
own words.
3. Conclusion This is the last paragraph of a composition that sums up everything about it. It is at this
point in the essay that students will inevitably begin to struggle. This is the portion of the essay
that will leave the most immediate impression on the reader’s mind. Therefore, it must be
effective and logical. Do not introduce any new information into the conclusion; rather, synthesize
and conclude concerning the information presented in the essay’s body.
Evidence -As you judge for the relevance of ideas, you must look for evidence to identify the
author’s purpose. Author’s Purpose -An author’s purpose is his/her reason for or intent in writing.

Pros and Cons of Technology
1Technology is useful to humanity, and computers become pervasive. Most people rely on
computers. For them, life became easier through it, while for some, it is life itself.

2Fortunately, computer is a useful tool for it can help us in every way it can. Tasks became
manageable, more efficient, and useful. Albert Einstein remarked that it has become appallingly
obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. Some people would just let the computer
think for itself since computers can do everything through searching. People somewhat lost their
ability for they become reliant on computers. Also, it brings a catastrophic disturbance. People spend
hours of their time and money on computers just playing computer games, not to pursue knowledge
or develop the computer skills that would help them be prepared in the future and the real world.

3No one can deny the good things that technology has done. Technology quenched the
people's thirst, for it can provide satisfaction to the thirsty and hungry soul. Matt Mullenweg said that
technology was its best when it brings people together. Technology really binds the people with its
innovations. We continue to use social media platforms to communicate with our loved ones.

4 Indeed, the computer is a great invention. However, it significantly affects us. We can have
digital eye strain, emotional problems, sleep problems, and musculoskeletal problems. Because of this,
we should remember our limitations in using computers.
