My Happiness depends on an electric appliance

And I do not mind giving it so much credit
With life in this city being what it is
Each person separated from friends
By a tangle of subways and buses
Yes my telephone is my joy
It tells me that I am in the word and wanted
It rings and I am alerted to love or gossip
I go comb my hair which begins to sparkle
Without it I was like a bear in a cave
Drowsing through a shadowy winter
It rings and spring has come
I stretch and amble out into the sunshine
Hungry again as I pick up the receiver
For the human voice and the good news of friends.

may influence you to believe certain ideas and push you to take some form of action. Some information
may also dissuade you from believing or doing other things.

In the previous modules, you have learned that many writers use argumentative texts to persuade the
readers to agree to their points of view. Writers do so, not just present information, but by showing the
pros and cons of an issue. In extracting information from argumentative texts, you must be able to note
the issue and the supporting (pros) and opposing (cons) opinions about the issue.

SYNOPSIS
A wealthy, invalid, sick for 12 years, querulous, self-centered neurotic, Mrs. Stevenson finds herself
completely all alone in her house at 53 North Sutton Place near the Queensborough Bridge. Thinking that
her husband, Mr. Elbert Stevenson, would be home, she gave her nurse and the servants the night off.

When her husband is not yet home, she called the operator to connect her to her husbands’ office at Murray
Hill 4-0098. She is complaining to herself that every time she dials, the line is always busy. At last the operator
was able to connect her, but accidentally connected her to another number, so she overheard a conversation
between a killer, George, and his Boss, about a murder plot, to use a knife, that the murder should look like a
robbery. The murder will take place at eleven o’clock in the evening, the victim is a woman, home alone, who
lives near a bridge just as the train crosses the bridge so the sound will mask any screams from the victim.
Horrified of what she heard, she called the operator and relate to the Chief Operator of what she heard and
demanded to trace the source of that call.
The operator explains that only the police can do that job and the owner of the telephone company. The
operator connects her to the Police Station; Sergeant Duffy is on duty at Precinct 43. She related what the
conversation she overheard eight minutes earlier, but Sgt. Duffy paid no attention saying that they are
receiving many information about crimes and others.
Later Mrs. Stevenson receives a call from Western Union that a telegram was send from her husband
saying that he is leaving for Boston at 11 pm for an urgent business.

speaks in a suffocated voice that the operator asks her to speak louder. She told the operator that someone is
