Lesson Plan

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the class, students will be able to:
 Make sentences using some of the most common verb patterns
 Use correctly the verbs in gerund forms
 Identify different functions of gerund in sentences

Subject Matter
Topic: Gerund and its functions
Materials:
 Powerpoint presentation
 Eloquence
 A Journey Through Anglo-american Literature

II. Procedure
Routine:
 Classroom arrangement/ Seating arrangement
 Attendance

Motivation:
 Show two sentences to students and ask for volunteers to mime the actions in the second
sentence from each set:
o Mary and John met on the street. They stopped to talk to each other.
o Mary and John hold an argument. They stopped talking to each other.

 Process the difference between the two actions.


 Introduce the two forms and focus on gerunds
 Give more example sentences that use gerunds.
 Visiting the Real Felipe is an exciting experience.
 I like going to Boracay every summer.
 After having lunch, we’ll go to Kalanggaman Island.
 I go shopping at Mega Mall every weekend.

Discussion:
 Elicit other examples of gerunds in sentence from the students.
 Introduce the functions of gerunds
Functions of gerunds:
1. Subject
2. Appositive
3. Direct Object
4. Object of preposition
5. Indirect object
6. Predicative nominative or Subjective complement

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences with the gerund form of the verbs in parenthesis.
1. She is good at _____ (dance).
2. He is crazy about ______ (sing).
3. I don’t like (play) ______ cards.
4. They are afraid of (swim) ______ in the sea.
5. You should give up _______ (smoke).
6. Sam dreams of (be) _______ a popstar.
7. He is interested in (make) ______ friends.

9. We insist on (cook) ______ the dinner themselves.
10. Their job is (serve) ______ the customer at bank.

Exercise 2: Underline the gerund in each sentence, and then write on the line its function.
1. Singing is Sarah’s talent.
2. Adela prefers skiing.
3. Another sport, fencing, is also popular.
4. Lea has a new exercise, biking.
5. The audience was bothered by their whispering.
6. The actress’ leisure activity is swimming.
7. Grandmother finds pleasure in gardening.
8. Please stop that shouting!
9. The documentary showed the hazards of smoking.
10. An early method of food preservation was pickling.

Activity 1: Convert the following verbs to gerund and construct sentences using its varied functions.

Activity 2:
 Verbs are written in pieces of paper and the students will pick and need to form its gerund form
and use it in sentence.

III. Evaluation
Directions: Write the gerunds. Explain its use in each sentence.
1. Helping a friend is an automatic yes in your book.
2. Helping others with a favor is dangerous and should be avoided.
3. When it comes to helping, ultimately, it’s not even about expecting money or just helping
friends out.
4. Take time getting used to refusing people’s requests.
5. Although simple, it is similar to the rules that prevent people from bumping into others in the
streets.
6. Won’t people see you as a jerk in refusing to help them?
7. Individuals may even get mad for saying no to them.
8. You can boil this down as the difference of needing vs. wanting help.
9. One way to deal with this is by giving your closest friends and family a higher priority.
10. You can’t stand still watching others in need, but at the same time you can’t assist everyone
to your own detriment.

IV. Valuing
 Share a picture with your partner and talk about it using a gerund.
Example: I remember taking this picture. It was a weekend in July. Mu family was at the
beach. I remember asking my sister to take the picture quickly because the sun was in my
eyes. It was beautiful, sunny day.
 Share discussion to class.
