What This Module is About

Biases may be either inborn or learned. We can develop biases for or against
a person, a group, or a belief. Being human means having personal prejudices. We
all hold our own subjective views of the world and affected by our own perceptions,
opinions, values, education, family, friends, peers and others.

Being aware of one’s prejudices is important for personal well- being as well
as professional success.

This module aims to realize the effects of biases and prejudices in real life
situation. This also makes people become aware of their prejudices and learn how to
overcome them.

What I Need to Know

Bias and prejudice are commonly viewed as being closely related. They are
forming opinion before being aware of the facts of a case concerned.

Bias can affect our work of life. They can influence action and decisions such
as who we hire or promote, how we interact with individuals in a given group, what
advice we consider and how we perform.

What Is It

I have here two scenarios. Think whether the scenario is fair or not.

 
1. Not allowing one of your classmates to join the group as he is physically disabled
and is wasting of time.

2.Teachers favor some students in the evaluation of performance tasks over others.

The first scenario shows favoritism and classified as bias. The second shows
discrimination for it tells us unfavorable opinion and pre-judges others and that’s what we
call prejudice.
Bias – means a tendency to favor a person, group or thing or point of view over another,
often
in an unfair way.

Example:
Female teachers give more attention to girls.
Prejudice – is an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without
knowledge, though or reason. It simply means pre-judge others.
Example:
It is sometimes assumed that someone who is physically disabled is also mentally
disabled.
