Quarter 1 – Module 11:
Solving Problems Involving
Inverse Functions
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the General Mathematics – Grade 11 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)

Module on Solving Problems Involving Inverse Functions.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the General Mathematics – Grade 11 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)

Module on Inverse Functions.

Inverse function is a function that "reverses" another function. It is a function that

can be considered as the “undo” of anything that the original function does.

For example, how we arrange books in shelves could be called a function. If so,

what would be the inverse function of arranging those books? The inverse function
would be “unarranged” books, because unarranged books will “undo” the original
function of arranged books.

Let us have Inverse Function in a Mathematical point of view. For instance, we

have the function f(x) = 5x + 8. The two mathematical operations that will be used
in the function f(x) are multiplication and addition. For whatever values of x in the
function we use, it will be multiplied to 5 and will be added to 8. To have the
inverse or the undo of that function, we will take the inverse of the mathematical
operations we applied which is division as the inverse of multiplication, and
subtraction as the inverse of addition. Remember that by taking the inverse of the
relation or by undoing the function, it will result to a new function.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

Lesson
Problem Solving Involving
Inverse function

Function can be illustrated through graph, table of values, diagrams, sets of

ordered pairs, and even through equations. For example, let us consider the
function f ( x )=x +3. If the given x values or domain are { 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10 }, the values of
f ( x ) or the range will be { 5 , 7 , 9 ,11 ,13 }. Then

f ( x )=2 x +3 : { ( 2 ,5 )( 4 ,7 )( 6 ,9 )( 8 , 11 ) ( 10 ,13 ) }

The inverse function of f , denoted by f −1, can be formed by interchanging the

first and second coordinates of each of these pairs. The inverse function of
f ( x )=x +3 can be written as follows:

f ( x )=x +3
y=x +3
x= y +3
x−3= y
y=x −3

f (x)−1 =x−3 : { ( 5 ,2 ) ( 7 , 4 )( 9 ,6 )( 11 , 8 ) ( 13 ,10 ) }

Take note that the domain of f ( x ) is the same of the range f (x)−1, and
interchangeable. This denotes that the functions f ( x ) and f (x)−1 is the result of
“undoing” each other.

This implies that just like other functions, inverse function is useful in
solving especially associated problem.

Solving Problems Involving Inverse Functions

The idea of inverse functions can be applied in solving word problems relating to
reversible methods.

1. A teacher asked his students to think of a non-negative number and write it on a

piece of paper. After that, he instructed them to follow his succeeding instructions.
Upon completing the procedures, he then informed them that he will be guessing
the number that the students chose.

Instructions:

1. Think of a nonnegative number

2. Add four to that nonnegative number

3. then square the sum of the nonnegative number you think of and four

4. multiply the result by six

5. divide the result by four

Solution:

1. Let x be the nonnegative number the student is thinking of

2. x +4

3. ( x +4 )2

4. 6 ( x +4 )2

6 ( x+ 4 )2

If the result of the procedure is 54, what is the number the student is thinking of?
To determine the number let the function be:

Illustrative Examples:

1. The grade 11 senior high school students are offering car wash service to raise
funds. The students spent 5,000.00 Php on materials and supplies and earned
8,000.00 Php. If the students collect 104.00 Php for each car, how many cars did
they wash?

Solution:

Let x be the number of cars washed

f ( x )=104 x – 5,000

To solve for the number of cars (x) washed get the inverse of the function

f ( x )=104 x −5,000
y=104 x−5,000
x=104 y −5,000
x +5,000=104 y

2. Mr. Rolando is planning a debut reception for his only daughter at Oriental Hall.
The use of the hall costs 4,500.00 Php and that covers lights and sounds,
electricity, water, and other utility fee. An additional 50.00 Php is also charged for
each guest for the use of tables and chairs. If Mr. Rolando’s budget for hall
expenses is limited to 10,000.00 Php. How many guests can he invite?

Solution:

Let x be the number of guests

f ( x )=4,500+50 x

To solve for the number of guest (x) get the inverse of the function

f ( x )=4,500+50 x

y=4,500+50 x

x=4,500+50 y
