Culture at work : Attitudes to critical questions

In some cultures any form of questioning or criticism in public is very impolite. In other
cultures it is important to speak out and criticism is not taken personally. What is
common in your culture? How might this difference cause misunderstanding in
multicultural terms?

Answer : In my opinion, in my culture public criticism or questioning is a common


occurrence. Not everyone does, but most people do .

Perhaps because of differences in viewpoint, there is a misunderstanding. From one's


point of view it can be critical and prompt inquiry can make it uncomfortable and
disrespectful to hear. And from a different point of view, it's not a big thing to matter.
Because at times we have taken more of the usual customs, misunderstandings have
arisen
