Question 1 Let S = {(1, 0, 1), (0, 0, 1), (1, 0, 2)} and
T = {(1, 0, 1), (1, 0, 3)} be two subsets of V = R3 .
(i) Prove that S is l.d. and T is l.i.
(ii) Determine which of the following is true?

(a) L[S] ⊂ L[T ] (b) L[T ] ⊂ L[S] (c) L[S] = L[T ]

Question 2 Let S = {(1, 1, −1), (1, 1, 1), (1, 0, 1)} and


T = {(1, 1, 0), (0, 1, 1), (1, 0, 1} be two subsets of
V = R3 .
Determine (i) if S and T are l.i and (ii) show that
L[S] = L[T ].
Question 3 Let S = {1, x, x2 } and
T = {1 − x, 1 + x, 1 + x2 } be two subsets of V = P2 .
Prove that both are l.i. and L[S] = L[T ].
Question 4 Let S = {1, cos x, cos 2x, sin2 x} and
T = {cos x, cos2 x, sin2 x, cos 2x} be two subsets of
V = C[−π, π].
Prove that both S and T are l.d and L[S] = L[T ].
Question 5 Let S = {1, cos πx, cos 2πx, · · · , cos nπx}
and T = {sin πx, sin 2πx, · · · , sin nπx} be two subsets of
V = C[−1, 1].
(i) Prove that both S and T are l.i.
(ii) Which one of the following is true?

(a) L[S] ⊂ L[T ] (b) L[T ] ⊂ L[S]

Question 6 Let subspaces U and W of V = R4 be
defined as under.
U = {(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) ∈ R4 : x1 + x2 + x3 = 0}
W = {(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) ∈ R4 : x2 = 3x3 , x1 + x4 = 0}
Find a basis for each of the subspaces U, W, U ∩ W .
Question 7 Let subspaces U and W V = R4 be
defined as under
U = {(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) ∈ R4 : x1 + 2x2 + x3 = x2 − x3 }
W = {(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) ∈ R4 : x1 + 3x3 = x2 − 3x3 }
Find a basis for each of the subspaces U, W, U ∩ W .
Question 8 Let U and W be the following subspaces
of V = P3 .

Also, find their dimensions.

Question 13 Prove that a subset S of a vector space V
is a subspace iff L[S] = S. Hence, show that
L[L[S]] = L[S].
Question 14 In Questions 6 and 7, find the sum
U + W and its dimension. Is it a direct sum?
Question 15 In Questions 8,9,10, find the sum U + W
and its dimension. Is it a direct sum?
