Assessment 1: Written Assessment
Part A
Task Description
In this activity you will be required to investigate a particular market trend and/
or development relevant to the product or organisation you are considering.
Discuss the data needed for this exercise with your lecturer.

Task 1
Interpret the market trend or developments by analysing the data. You should
complete this task by conducting appropriate statistical analysis of the market
data to prepare information about the actual trend or development. Your main
aim is to determine how these trends or developments will impact on your
organisation’s business.
[Australian food and grocery industry]
Throughout 2019-20, the Australian Food and Grocery (AFG) sector faced difficult
conditions. The AFG industry, on the other hand, has remained resilient in the face of
this environment, with total sector turnover of $131.3 billion and relatively consistent
employment of 324,450 persons at the end of the year. In actual terms, AFG turnover
fell by 2.0 percent in 2019-20, despite some value growth in certain areas. Food and
beverage manufacturing, as well as grocery turnover, both declined by 2.5 percent and
6.3 percent, respectively, at a more granular level. This demonstrates the Food and
Grocery sub-sectors' ongoing issues, which include retail price deflation and
considerable cost pressures in some places. Fresh Produce, on the other hand, defied
the trend and increased by 8.8%. The sector's Industry Value Added fell 4.9 percent to
$32.9 billion overall. The AFG sector's long-term employment trend is quite stable, with
employment ranging between 315,000 and 335,000 during the last decade. As a result
of continuous losses in total manufacturing employment, total employment declined by
1.4 percent in 2019-20. However, as a share of manufacturing employment, it
remained unchanged at 39.1 percent. The AFG sector must continue to innovate and
improve productivity in order to return to positive turnover growth. Despite increased
domestic competition, the AFG sector maintains a strong export focus, with about a
quarter of production being exported and overall exports increasing by 1.9 percent in
2019-20. This expansion follows a pattern of significant historical export growth, as
evidenced by a 38.9% increase in exports from 2010-11 to 2019-20. As huge economic
structural shifts have occurred - and consolidated - in recent years, Australia's
manufacturing industry has been under pressure. This isn't a brand-new
metamorphosis. The economy has evolved from one centred on the production of
primary items to one centred on the production of services.
Task 2
Conduct further analysis of the data including the use of measures of central
tendency or dispersion to interpret the data. Also check for correlations between
data sets. Outline how the results of this analysis might assist you in making
appropriate business decisions.

The sector's total turnover was $131.3 billion in 2019-20, a real fall of 2.0 percent.
Outside of 2018-19, however, turnover is at an all-time high and has shown consistent
strength since the global financial crisis, as seen by its rise to a 36 percent share of
manufacturing turnover (up from 35.4 percent). In addition, the combined sector IVA for
the food and beverage, grocery, and fresh produce sub-sectors was around $32.9
billion in 2019-20, down 4.9 percent in real terms but still accounting for 33 percent of
manufacturing IVA.
Despite adverse conditions in the industrial sector, Australian Food and Grocery (AFG)
turnover has remained resilient, with a real reduction of $2.7 billion from its peak of
$134.0 billion in 2018-19, a 2.0 percent decline. This is a minor departure from its
recent history of year-on-year growth, which has averaged 1.3 percent real growth over
the last five years.
Part B – Analyse your organisation
Task Description
In this activity you will analyse your organisation’s business performance to
determine the success of your current marketing activities. Your aim is to
provide data to assist with forecasting of marketing needs.

Task 1
Using the data you have obtained in the previous part of this assignment
develop forecasts for the organisation or product you are examining
Based on the data presented in the activities above, we can draw a forecast for the
result for the year 2020-2021.
To do this we will need to analyse the market trends that were in effect for the end of
the fiscal year analysed and compare them with the trends and peculiarities of the
fiscal year 2020-2021. This period was marked by the biggest pandemic the country
has faced in its recent past, which impacted the economy in many, if not all, possible
areas. In view of this fact, we will have to take it into account when drawing up
expectations for the current fiscal year, which will cause a sharp drop in relation to the
previous one. Taking all this into account, we arrive at the forecasts that are presented
below:

We can highlight that, as already mentioned, almost all indices referring to the
Australian food industry fell in this forecast, with an emphasis on production and Net
Capital. We can also highlight that the import of food has grown, as the demand for
food in the country has increased, forcing the government to increase imports of this
type of product.
