Q. QUESTION Marks CL COs

No
.

1. A. Define effectiveness and Efficiency of a heat exchanger 2M R CO5

B. Derive an expression for the LMTD of a counter flow heat exchanger & State the 8M U CO5

assumptions made

2. Counter flow heat exchanger is employed to cool 0.55 kg/sec (Cp = 2.45kJ/kgK) of 10M U CO5

oil from 115°C to 40°C by the use of water. The inlet and outlet temperature of
cooling water are 15°C and 75°C respectively. The overall heat transfer coefficient is
expected to be 1450 W/m2°C. Using NTU method, calculate the following: i) The
mass flow rate of water. ii) The effectiveness of heat exchanger. iii) The surface area
required.

3. Using Buckingham's it-theorem, obtain the relationship between various non 5M U CO4

dimensional numbers for forced convection heat transfer

4. A. With reference to fluid flow over a flat plate, discuss the concept of velocity 5M U CO4

boundary layer and thermal boundary layer, with necessary sketches

B. Explain physical significance of i) Grashoff number ii) Prandtl number iii) Nusselt 5M U CO4

number iv) Reynolds number

5 The water in a tank at 20°C is heated by passing the steam through a pipe of 50 cm 10M AN CO4

long and 5 cm dia. If the pipe surface temperature is maintained at 100°C. (i) find the
heat loss from the pipe per hour if the pipe is kept horizontal. (ii) If the pipe is kept
vertical, then also find out the heat loss from the pipe per hour
