DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
ELEMENTS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING AND MECHANICS
ASSIGNMENT- 2 (Aug-2021)

1. Discuss types of friction (CO2, L1)

2. Define (a) Angle of friction (b) Limiting friction (c) Coefficient of friction (d) Angle of repose
(e) Cone of friction (CO2, L1)

3. Write laws of static and dynamic friction (CO2, L1)

4. Discuss with diagrams (a) Types of supports (b) Types of beams (c) Types of loads

(CO3, L2)

5. Write assumptions made in simple plane trusses. (CO3, L1)

6. Distinguish between statically determinate and indeterminate structure/beams. (CO3, L1)

7. Write brief procedure for solving plane trusses by method of joints and sections. (CO3, L1)

8. The crate shown in Figure 1 has a mass of 580 kg. If P = 6000 N, find the magnitude of the
frictional force which acts on the crate. What value of P will cause the crate to have impending
motion up the plane? Find the minimum value of P required to keep the crate from sliding down
the plane. For what range of value of P will the crate remain in the equilibrium position shown in
the figure? (CO2, L3)

9. Calculate the value of P required to cause the motion of the block shown in Figure 2. Take the
coefficient of friction for all surfaces as 0.2. (CO2, L3)

Figure 2

10. The position of machine block is adjusted by the wedge as shown in Figure 3. If the
coefficient of friction for all the surface is 0.25, determine the force P required to raise the block.
(CO2, L3)

11. A ladder weighing 200 N and 4 m long is placed on the ground at an angle of 60° and the top
of the ladder rests against the wall, as shown in Figure 4. A man weighing 1000 N stands at the
top of the ladder. The coefficient of friction between the wall and the ladder is 0.30 and that
between the ground and the ladder is 0.35. If the ladder is not to slip, find the horizontal force P
required to be applied to the ladder at its end on the floor. (CO2, L3)

members AB, AG and GH by the method of sections. (CO3, L3)
