OLW NO.: 03 BAYBAYIN WRITNG

NAME: DATE AND TIME OF SUBMISSION:

PROGRAM: COURSE:

Click the link and watch the video as regards the introduction to baybayin writing. As a literature
student, we are somewhat compelled to go back to the literary heritage our ancestors had preserved,
one of which is to revisit baybayin script/writing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-
Sp9LYfWuw&ab_channel=It%27sEunicci

We may not be familiar with this anymore, but this course serves as the springboard to bring back and
appreciate the literature of our own.

Baybayin is one of the Philippines' ancient scriptures and forms of writing. Baybayin is just one of at
least 16 different writing systems that were used in pre-colonial Philippines. The character-based
alphabet was used in pre-colonial times and have shown a sudden spike of resurgence in the country's
modern era. Originating from ancient India, and believed to be one of the many writing systems used
during pre-colonial Philippines, the Spanish almost eradicated the script by exchanging it with the
Roman alphabets. However, many records and artifacts of the script survived up to this day and many
more are still being discovered and preserved.

Below is a sample table as to what baybayin looks like

1. After watching the video, in the same file, here, create a post card with the following format

AN OUTPUT IN LIT 001 PHILIPPINE LITERATURE/

AWTPUT SA LIT 001 PANITIKANG PILIPINO
YOUR FULL NAME IN BAYBAYIN
ENGLISH NAME

WRITE A SYNONYMOUS/RELATED WORD (only 1 word) OF LITERATURE USING

BAYBAYIN SCRIPT
2. Explain briefly as to why you did choose the word in describing what literature is? (80-100
words). Since this is a poster, you may use some graphics/ designs in making your post card
appealing to the audience. You may use your own font style/size whatsoever. Submit this on the
scheduled time, with the same format but this time, it’s LETTER C, SINCE THIS IS NOW olw3.
Once again for panitikan, gamitan ang Filipino kung maari, maari ring gumamit ng wikang English
kung nais ng mag-aaral.
OLW 4 HAIKU

NAME: DATE AND TIME OF SUBMISSION:

PROGRAM: COURSE:

HAIKU

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry made of short, unrhymed lines that evoke natural imagery. Haiku can
come in a variety of different formats of short verses, though the most common is a three-line poem
with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.

Reviewing examples of haiku poems is an excellent way to become familiar with this form of poetry and
the sensory language it uses, and gain some inspiration.

In Japanese, there are five "moras" in the first and third line, and seven in the second, following the
standard 5-7-5 structure of haiku. A mora is a sound unit, much like a syllable, but is not identical to it.
This rhythm is often lost in translation, as not every English word has the same number of syllables, or
moras, as its Japanese counterpart. For example, haiku has two syllables in English and in Japanese, it
has three moras.

EXAMPLES:

An old silent pond... (5 MORAS)

A frog jumps into the pond, (7 MORAS)
splash! Silence again. (5 MORAS)

In the twilight rain (5 MORAS)

these brilliant-hued hibiscus - (7 MORAS)
A lovely sunset. ( 5 MORAS)

How to write Haiku?

Decide what kind of haiku you’d like to write. Kindly use the 5-7-5 syllable style. If you’re writing an
English haiku, you’ll separate your poem into three lines.

Determine your subject matter. Pay attention to small details around you. Nature themes are most
common in haiku, so start to notice things like birds or leaves outside, the way the air feels, or even a
smell in the air. Many haiku are about very simple natural elements of day-to-day life.
Use short phrases that evoke strong images. Think of how Japanese poets use kigo, and choose images
that symbolize a season (say, fallen leaves for fall or daffodils for spring) to set a mood with very few
words.

Use a kireji or “cutting word” to create a break in the meter. Remember to use punctuation in
conjunction with a kireji to control the rhythm of the poem

DIRECTIONS: Make a Haiku of your own. Strictly, kindly follow the syllabication in crafting a Haiku (5-7-5
structure)

Themes may vary from nature, seasons, natural world, oceans, experiences, beauty, love among others.

First line should have 5 moras, second line should have 7 moras, and third line should have 5 moras,
hence 5-7-5 structure

As much as possible, please use descriptive and lively words to make it more interesting. Remember,
you are expressing an idea with the use of poetry.

SA PANITIKAN, MAAARING GAMITIN ANG WIKANG FILIPINO SA PAGGAWA NG HAIKU. DAPAT LANG

YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOR THE PIECE AND THE EXPLANATION.
HUWAG KALIMUTAN ANG EXPLANATION AT PALIWANAG PAGKATAPOS NG INYONG HAIKU

Afterwards, provide a 100-200 words which explain briefly about the content of your Haiku-it may be
the symbols or imagery that you use, the language that you employ, and the aesthetics of the poetry
itself. Haiku may be written in English or Filipino language
