Please write your Name, ID and Section on the first page of the
answer script - you have to do this for both handwritten or LATEX
submission. You have to submit your answers by 07/08/2021
12.30PM.

You can only submit a PDF file - image or doc files won’t be accepted.
Before submitting the PDF, please rename the PDF file in the format -
SET_ID_SECTION.

Answer the questions by yourself. Plagiarism will lead to cancellation

of scores. The highest possible score in the midterm is 40. Your marks will be
scaled and submitting your script in LATEX will result in bonus credit.

PART A: Preliminaries

a. Find the eigenvectors of H.

b. Is H hermitian? What about others?

c. Prove that σi2 = I (i = x, y, z)

d. Find [σx , [σy , σz ]]

e. Does the σ matrices satisfy the Jacobi identity? (Google it! Still not getting it,
then ask me)?

f. What kind of matrices are σ-matrices? (Orthogonal, hermitian...?)

PART B: Introductory RMT

I) Consider we have two types of vertices. One is yellow and the other is orange.
Let’s say we have two scenarios. In the first one, we only allow yellow vertices to
interact with yellow ones orange ones to interact with orange ones. In the second
scenario, yellow vertices only interact with orange ones( self interaction not allowed)

Also, yellow vertices have valency 3 and orange vertices have valency 4.

a. Write the Gaussian Integral corresponding to scenario 1.

b. Write the Gaussian Integral corresponding to scenario 2.

c. Solve both the Gaussian Integrals (upto 2nd order). (By expanding in the cou-
pling)

d. Verify Wick’s theorem for the above two scenarios for n=4 and 7 for students
whose last digit of ID is odd and n=5 and 6 for students whose last digit of ID
is even.

II) Consider the following matrix integral:

Z
1 1
DM e− 2 Tr(M )+ĝ Tr(M )
2 3
Z=
z0

DM e−1/2 Tr(M )
R 2
Here, z0 :=

a. Explain/show why hMij Mkl i = δi1 δjk

b. Expand Z in powers of ĝ.

c. Calculate hTr (M 3 )i , hTr (M 7 )i for students whose last digit of ID is odd and hT r (M 5 )i , hT r (M 6

f. Consider adding another type of vertex (of valency 4) and coupling ĥ

g. Expand the integral in powers of both ĝ and ĥ

h. Calculate expectation value by expanding upto 3rd non-zero order and draw the
corresponding diagrams.

III)Consider the following one-dimensional Gaussian integral

−x2 x5
Z
dx
Z= √ exp ( +g )
2π 2 3

i) Expand the integral in powers of g

ii) Compute hX n i

iii) How can you write the correlation function for the above scenario in terms of
source term(j 0 s)?

iv) Check that the above integral generates all our graph symmetries (graph of
valency 3). Check upto 3rd non-zero order.

v) Verify Wick’s theorem for n = 4, 7 for students whose last digit of ID is odd
and n=5 and 6 for students whose last digit of ID is even.
