Traffic engineers or designers are communicating with road user through different road signs,

pavement markings and signal that are situated on the road. They are placed there to give
advance information about the road ahead and road condition. Road signals and signs give
warning and guidance to the driver of what can be expected on the road .It also help in
regulating the traffic. It is essential for the driver to understand these traffic control devices.
Previous study mentions that road-user behaviour showed by drivers in developing nations is
very poor and due to their absence of awareness about road safety policy, rules and regulations1.
Studies also brings a picture of their attitude for the important road safety issues.2
India is a country with high number of accidents that take place every day due to the negligence
of the drivers, inadequate knowledge or simply drivers do not obey traffic laws which result in
fatal injuries to drivers of the vehicles or pedestrian. Some of the drivers do not follow the
traffic signal that result in fatal accidents.
In this project work a survey was designed and conducted on drivers to check the driver
awareness on Traffic control devices including road traffic signs, traffic signals and road
markings that they witness on the road. During the course of field visit traffic violations like
such as entering the “no entry place”, “overloading”, “lack of lane discipline” were observed
.These kinds of acts result in accidents and congestion on the road and creating safety issue to
other road users also. During the personal interaction with drivers the possession of driving
license was also verified.
India today reports in September 4, 2018, exposed about the obtainment of driver’s license
through a broker or agent of some kind by paying them some money even without giving any
type of exam or giving any type of test. This illegal method of attaining licenses result in rash
driving on the behalf of the drivers as they are less inclined to follow rules and having
inadequate knowledge of the road signal and signage result in some devastating result as we
have seen so many times in the past that so many accident happen on the road because of the
mistake of the driver or because he had acquired his driver license through fraudulent methods
have did not possess the proper knowledge to operate the vehicle on road and resulted in the
accident and loss of life .
As an effort to improve the driver behavior there are several enforcement methods setup by the
police department for the compliance of road rules through traditional (deployment of traffic
police officers on the road) and intelligent transport enforcement system such as installation of

speed detection cameras, red light jumping detection, stop line violation detections. The police
department has also organized events to improve awareness in Road safety to the drivers
through advertisement, radio, newspaper online advertisement which will help in reduction of
accident on the road.
In India most of the road signs and signals are like that of the European except that which are
bilingual. Most of the state and national highway have road signs in state language as well as
English language. Traffic signs and signal work as a local guide to the road user and every road
user should have knowledge about these road signs and signals
