Using Caterpillar Cylinder Pack Pulling Tools{1239}

SMCS - 1239
All Caterpillar Diesel Engines with Cylinder Liners.

Reference: Service Manual, Parts Book.

Caterpillar Cylinder Pack Pulling Tools can be used to remove the cylinder liner, piston and
connecting rod as a unit while the engine is in the chassis.

The process of removing a cylinder pack (piston, connecting rod, cylinder liner) with this cylinder
pulling tool is patented by Caterpillar Tractor Co. Therefore, the use of this process on any engine
other than Caterpillar engines is strictly prohibited.

1 Prepare the engine for cylinder pack removal. Remove the piston cooling jets, if the engine is so
equipped. See the Service Manual.

NOTICE

NEVER use the starter to rotate the engine crankshaft in the following
procedure. Always use an engine turning tool. Turn the crankshaft in
the normal direction of rotation only.

2 Rotate the crankshaft until piston (1) of the cylinder pack to be removed is at BDC (bottom dead
center). Do NOT insert the tool at this time.

3 Clean the exposed part of the cylinder liner with a nonflammable solvent. Wipe off all
remaining solvent.

4 Loosen nut (2), above the top plate of the puller tool, so that the puller is at its minimum
diameter. Insert the puller tool into the cylinder liner.

5 Tighten nut (2) to a torque of 120 ± 15 N·m (90 ± 10 lb ft) until the puller tool is expanded
tightly against the wall of the cylinder liner.

6 The cylinder pack (liner, piston, connecting rod) can be removed from the engine block by one
of the following three methods.

The weight of a cylinder pack plus the puller tool can exceed
permissable weight for manual lifting. Do not lift manually. Always use
a lifting device.

NOTE: Method (A) is the preferred method and should be used whenever possible.

A Loosen the nuts on the rod cap bolts (make sure the nuts are still against the rod cap). Rotate the
crankshaft with an engine turning tool until the top of the piston contacts the puller tool. Continue
to turn the crankshaft with the engine turning tool until the cylinder pack is forced out of the
engine block, and the rod journal is at top dead center (TDC). Remove the rod cap. Install rubber
or plastic tubing over the connecting rod bolts to protect the crankshaft journal surfaces.

B Remove the rod cap. Install rubber or plastic tubing over the connecting rod bolts to protect the
crankshaft journal surfaces. Use a 5F7347 Liner Puller Head (3) and three 5F7350 Blocks (4) to
pull the cylinder pack.

If a jib crane is used to pull the cylinder pack, the vehicle must be
secured to avoid lifting the engine end of the vehicle.

C Remove the rod cap. Install rubber or plastic tubing over the connecting rod bolts to protect the
crankshaft journal surfaces. Install a lifting eye (5) on the puller tool rod. Pull the cylinder pack
with a jib crane.
