Welcome Back Everyone

Reshma Gurung 12 5C
How is everyone doing after a very long period of quarantine? There is no
doubt that most of the students reading this article are either happy to be
back to school or wishing for further online classes. Nonetheless, it is that
time of the year again.

The School’s Opening Ceremony was successfully held on 1st September

instead of usually being held on 2nd September. To many students’
surprise, it was held online through Teams. The first thing teachers were
required to cross off their list was to take the students’ roll calls by
switching on their cameras. Shortly after that, students were given
instructions on how to join the online ceremony without any technical
difficulties. Once joining the live ceremony, the principal was there to
welcome all students back to school with a warm smile. The ceremony
carried on after the prize-giving ceremony to all the hard-working and
diligent graduates which was an impressive moment to experience for all
the students.

Soon after that, one of the intelligent graduates provided all of us with her
experience with schoolwork and overcoming DSEs. Not only did her speech
motivate us, but it also offered us a sense of understanding of the
importance of time management. Moving on, the principal kindly
encouraged us with heart-warming words since we were all in the middle
of a pandemic. Even though the ceremony was held online, most teachers
were remarkably empathetic and reassuring to all new F.5 students and the
newcomers in the homeroom time.

Furthermore, a myriad of class affairs was discussed during homeroom

time. For instance, the designing of the class board was discussed with
numerous fresh ideas that were unique and creative. After all, it all seemed
like everyone was having a fun time catching up with their class teachers
and giving updates about their lives in quarantine.
To sum up, the first-ever online School’s Opening Ceremony was successful
in letting students adapt to the new school year with a lot of worries and
hesitation but with hopes that everything would go back to normal.
Renovation of the school
5B Elaine Lo

A renovation was done to the school during the summer holiday. Not only
did it change the look of our school, but it also protects the environment.
Do you know what has been changed?

The first thing you see when you step into the school is the school hall’s
floor, where grey floor tiles were used instead of the regular pink ones. The
new tiles gave the school hall a fresh look.

Also, on the ground floor, the office got a new look as well. A new room for
printing was added to the office. With this new room, the printing of
paperwork would be smoother and faster than before. Other than that, the
office has also become larger than before to provide the staff with a more
comfortable working environment.
Other than all the above changes, lights in some classrooms were also
changed into LED lights. Using LED lights, electricity could be saved to
protect the environment.

Last by not least, the multi-purpose room was also changed. Two rooms
were combined to create a bigger room. Desks and chairs were also added,
which provided students with a brand-new classroom to attend classes in.

Introducing: ECHO!
Yeashe Sherpa 5C

The SA election, which was held on the 15th of September, showed a clear
winner, ECHO. But what does ECHO stand for and want to do for students?

The chairlady of ECHO, Emma Cheung from Class 5B, had to say that they
represent students to teachers and want to reflect students voices to the
school. She also claimed that ECHO will be providing services to students
such as welfare and stationery. They believe that even if it might be a tough
year because of the COVID-19, they will try their best to provide their
services and be the voices and the hope of students.

One of the main things that students are curious about is the activities and
how the SA this year is going to manage with the current situation. They
have planned many exciting events, such as the Joint School Training Camp
which they say provides opportunities to show students how to work in
society. Emma disclosed that even if the events get cancelled, they are
planned to be held online, have test runs of the activity and hold polls to
gather consensus.

There are sure to be difficulties operating the SA, especially in these

unpredictable times. “It is sure to be a tough year but we want to try and
provide our best to not just to be the bridge between teachers and
students, but to also be the hope of students,” Emma explained. She further
expressed how much she hopes students can depend on SA.

The cabinet has shown great promise and they expect to be the voices of
students and help us grow as much as possible. I am for sure looking
forward to what they will do in the future.
The Bee – interview with the four house
captains
5D Rachel Cheung

Along with the end of the election of the Student’s Association, four house
captains were selected immediately. To let students have a deeper
understanding of them, the four house captains were interviewed.

Being a house captain, she must face a lot of ordeals. Angel Kwan, the
captain of the white house, does enjoy every moment whenever in house. If
it can harvest sweet, the brambles also there will be a busy bee. ‘When I
was with my committee members, I was in a cheerful mood. I would like to
take this challenge for myself and have the confidence to lead my house to
behave better than other houses, ‘Angel said. Katy Leung, who is the
captain of the red house, stated that she was encouraged by her friends to
be one of the candidates of red house captain. She also felt honoured to
take this job and was obliged to the trust given by her house committee
members.

With the outbreak of COVID-19, the swimming gala was cancelled. I

believed that our schoolmates must be curious about what kinds of
activities they will organize for the house members. Kelly Ting, the captain
of the yellow house, has disclosed that they were planning to organize
some online activities which can give us the chance to form close bonds
between the house committee members and our schoolmates.

Not only do the house captains prepare for the big events like swimming
gala, but they also must lead their house to stand out in the inter-house
discipline competition and influence our schoolmates to be well-behaved.
Yan Ho, who is the house captain of the green house, has been performing
well during the lessons. She mentioned that she hoped to be the role model
of self-disciplined, giving a positive influence to her schoolmates. She
expects her house members can participate in the lessons actively and
more importantly, do not neglect to finish all the homework assigned by
the teachers.
During the pandemic, it is a hard time for all of us. It is hoped that the house
captains can overcome the obstacles and provide our schoolmates with
intriguing memory this year. Wish us all the best.

Sunshine Generation
Getting to know our family
By Malaika Latif (5C)
You might be wondering, “What exactly does the
Sunshine Generation consist of?” Well, to answer your question, the
Sunshine Generation is a student organization under
the school’s Student Support Team. The organization is formed
by passionate, caring, and creative Big Sisters who are willing to guide the
new students through their new environment and go a long way towards
putting them at ease.

The organization aims to offer social and academic support to help
the newcomers adapt to their secondary school life quickly. Not only does
the Sunshine Generation seek to serve the school and help S1 girls develop
a sense of belonging, but it also aspires to strengthen peer bonding
between S1 girls and Big Sisters through activities.

Stepping into a new phase of life, the new students, without a
doubt, feel overwhelmed on so many levels. But they need not worry
because a series of events are held by the Sunshine generation to help the
newcomers adjust to secondary school life. Every year, there is a Big Sisters
training camp organized, which helps improve their leadership and
communication skills. It is an unforgettable experience full of joy and
laughter. Rather than that, the Sunshine generation has also organized
activities such as the Spelling Bees Contest and Sunshine Action. All these
activities have greatly assisted the S1 students by enhancing
their interpersonal communication skills and problem-solving skills.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has disrupted many lives, events and
activities. However, this does not stop the Big Sisters’ determination to
spread love and care. Despite all the hurdles, they continue to spread
positivity.

How the students feel about online learning
Lo Yan Tung Janice (5D)

Due to the outbreak of coronavirus, students need to learn to cope with

online learning. Given knowing how students feel about online learning,
two different forms of students were being interviewed.

Tiffany Lim, a Form 6 student, mentioned that she believes her DSE results
would likely be negatively affected due to online lessons as she is a firm
believer that lessons should be face-to-face, and not through a monitor. 'I
thrive in an academic environment that a school provides, and that feeling
cannot be replicated through the screen. Apart from that, I just prefer face-
to-face lessons in general.' she added.
However, there are still some pros of online study. It is quick and
convenient, especially useful during the coronavirus. "I believe that it is
useful and effective in one-on-one lessons, such as private tutorials, as I
could focus more during those classes. However, I couldn’t bring myself to
pay attention to a large class," she said.

Rosanna Lau, a form one student, finds it easy to adapt to her secondary
school life. She said, "I like my new school very much. The teachers and
classmates are very nice, when I have trouble, they will help me to solve the
problem. I also like the school's tuck shop because the food is amazing
there."
When I asked what's her biggest difference between her secondary school
life and her primary school life was, she said she used different online
platforms for having online lessons. Although she didn't use Microsoft Team
before, teachers taught her patiently, so she knows how to hand in
homework.

All in all, school suspension hindered the study progress of all students.
However, with the resumption of school, I am sure everything will go back
to normal and I hope online lessons will not be needed anymore.
Balancing life and studies
Chan Yuet Lea 5c(04)

I believe that most of you reading this article have concerns about health
and experience being stressed out because of the studies. After being
promoted to form 5, my friends and I feel more stressed as there are more
quizzes and homework and the DSE exams are approaching. Balancing life
and studies is important to a student, but how do we do that? Here I am
going to share some means that I use to relax while I find myself
overwhelmed by work.

First, we should schedule breaks appropriately and have enough sleep.

Students are working for a long period but never give themselves a break.
They worry that they might fail to meet deadlines if they take breaks more
frequently. They might form a habit of doing their work until they feel
exhausted. Sleep deprivation might cause more serious conditions such as
hair loss, skin breakout and diarrhoea. Their academic performance might
turn bad because of their deteriorated health.
On the other hand, some students take too many breaks. They lack good
time management skills for arranging their studies and breaks, which may
lead to worse academic results. To perform well academically and keep
ourselves healthy at the same time, we should plan breaks properly.
Therefore, we can aim at taking a short break every hour and make sure we
have around 7 hours of sleep.

Finally, we can do some stretching during spare time. As a senior form

student, I know how busy we are. There is always more work than we can
finish, and it is difficult to find time for physical exercise. Nevertheless, we
can do workouts that require minimal equipment and little space. For
instance, we can do simple stretches, yoga and body-weight exercises.
Research shows that doing a workout every day can boost our mental
health and physical health because it can reduce stress and improve our
body's resilience towards stress.

To sum up, we should manage our breaks and workout so that we can have
a healthier body which enables us to face academic challenges. Only if we
have a healthy body can we achieve good results in our exams.
