Act of Declaration of Philippine Independence

1. What does the document want to convey? (5 points)

The document sought to proclaim the sovereignty and independence of

the Philippines from the colonial rule of the Spanish Empire. It also conveys a message
that the Philippines has the right run as a country. And so, the Philippines, headed by
the Dictatorial Government has solemnly declared the independence whereas, the
Philippine flag and its symbols were introduced.

2. According to the documents, what do the symbols in the Philippine flag

What is your stand on this? Do you agree with the Filipinos the way they looked at the

Americans? (15 points)

Judging from the document, Filipinos regarded Americans with full gratitude
sh

towards gaining Independence from the Spanish regime through signifying the colors of
the Philippine flag to America’s flag. Historically speaking, Americans did a lot of
contributions towards our economy and during Spanish-American so commemorating
the colors of our flag compensates their contributions in our nation. Based on my

opinion, I believed that we should be grateful and give credit to the ones who made our
country ‘better than before’. According to my research, Americans improved the
economy, education and school system, trade and industry, public health and welfare,
transportation and communication and even introduced Democracy and Civil Liberties.
However, there are also negative impacts that Americans brought to us. These includes:
weakened Filipino communal spirits, traditions and our identity as a Filipino. At this
point, I want to clarify that I don’t agree in any kind of colonialism and this “colonial
mentality” has to stop. Filipinos should never look up to colonialist and imperialist who
came to our country to expand their power and territory; we should stop romanticizing
Americans but instead, let us give credit to all Filipinos who sacrificed a lot for our
country.
