ACT OF DECLARATION OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE

1. What does the document want to convey?

 The document wanted to convey that the Philippines is already free from the
Crown of Spain and that they already have the right to be free and
independent. The Declaration of Independence happened in Cavite-Viejo,
Province of Cavite on June 12, 1898.

2. According to the document, what do the symbols in the Philippine flag represent?
 The white triangle represents the legendary Katipunan Society's
distinguishing logo. The three stars, on the other hand, stand for the
country's three main islands: Luzon, Mindanao, and Panay. Furthermore, the
sun represents the country's sons' giant step toward Progress and
Civilization, while the eight rays represent the eight provinces – Manila,
Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Laguna, and Batangas – that
declared to be in a state of war as soon as the first revolt started. Finally, the
blue, red, and white, in honor of the United States of America flag, as a
symbol of our deep thanks to this great nation for its noble protection.

3. How did the Filipinos regard the United States of America based on the document?
What is your stand on this? Do you agree with the Filipinos the way they looked at
the Americans?
 The colors of the Philippine flag – blue, red and white – serves as a tribute to
the flag of the United States of America. It is a symbol of the Filipinos deep
gratitude to this Great Nation for the unselfish protection it has provided and
continues to provide. However, in my opinion, the credit should not be given
solely to the Americans, because our countrymen have been fighting back
since the beginning. The Katipunan Society was honored with the white
triangle, but what about the regular folks who gave their lives for our
country? What about those who went unnamed but made the ultimate
sacrifice? I remember our previous discussion, and it was always about how
the Philippines became free because of the Americans. Yes, we have achieved
ultimate freedom with the help of the Americans, but it was a collaborative
effort. I believe we should also acknowledge the efforts of our fellow citizens.
Furthermore, in my view, due to the colonial mentality of the Filipinos today,
we have yet to achieve total independence. Rather of accepting what we
already have, we imitate others. It's fine to admire others, but don't try to be
like them; instead, be unique.

4. What is the importance of this document in the history of our country?

 This paper will inform and guide us on what really happened in the Province
of Cavite on that particular day. Also, this is a proof that the Philippines is no
longer a colony of Spain.
